Chapter 7 - MELISSA WALKS IN

Emma's design studio occupied the second floor of a renovated brick building near the Scioto River. Police surrounded it quietly, expecting Ryan to arrive.
Instead, Melissa did.
She entered through the alley wearing a gray coat and carrying a canvas bag. She was thinner than in the old photographs, her dark hair streaked with silver, but Emma recognized her immediately.
Melissa recognized Emma too.
For several seconds neither woman spoke.
Then Melissa said, "I'm sorry I couldn't stop him sooner."
Detectives brought her to a secure interview room. She explained that after escaping the clinic, she changed names repeatedly and moved between shelters. Ryan found her twice. Each time someone inside a hospital, bank, or government office leaked information to him.
She learned to trust no system completely.
Months earlier, she saw Emma's wedding announcement online. She sent warnings through disposable numbers, but Ryan intercepted some and explained away the rest.
"Why did he choose me?" Emma asked.
Melissa's answer was painful. "Your inheritance."
Emma had inherited a commercial building from her parents. She rarely discussed it and assumed Ryan knew only that she rented studio space. In reality, the entire building belonged to her and generated substantial income.
Ryan discovered the property through probate records before they met. North Line Holdings was designed to receive loans against the building once he gained access to Emma's finances.
Melissa had found the documents and planned to expose him. Ryan imprisoned her, then used a corrupt physician to declare her dangerous. He convinced his family she had become violent and delusional.
"Did he try to kill you?" Bell asked.
Melissa looked toward the one-way glass. "At the workshop he wrapped a cord around my neck until I stopped fighting. He thought I passed out. I heard Kelsey tell him not to go too far because a body would be harder to explain."
She had survived by pretending to surrender.
When asked why she returned now, Melissa opened her canvas bag and removed a ledger. It documented every property, transfer, false loan, and bribed official connected to Ryan's scheme.
She had taken it from his private office before trying to leave.
The final page contained a payment made two days earlier to a man named Curtis Vale, a former county records technician. The notation read: BURN CARTER FILES / E. STUDIO.
Smoke alarms began sounding in the building.
A detective opened the door and shouted that fire had started on the first floor.
Emma, Melissa, and the officers evacuated through the rear stairwell. Flames spread unusually fast through the lobby. Fire crews later found accelerant near the electrical room.
Across the street, Emma saw a navy sweater disappear between two parked cars.
"Ryan!" she shouted.
He turned once.
Their eyes met through smoke and flashing emergency lights.
Then he ran.
Police captured Curtis Vale that evening. He admitted Ryan paid him to destroy county files and set the studio fire as a distraction. Ryan planned to cross into Canada using one of the passports from the safe-deposit box.
But the passport was no longer there.
May you like
Melissa had taken it weeks earlier.
For the first time, Ryan was trapped inside the country he believed he controlled.
