Chapter 4 - The Financial Counterattack

Two days after I walked out, Christopher’s legal team executed a series of precise, devastating maneuvers that caught Dwight and his family completely off guard.
First, the court granted an emergency asset freeze on all accounts linked to Dwight, cutting off his immediate access to the 48,000 dollars I had contributed, as well as his personal savings. Second, criminal summonses were issued for Jared regarding the physical assault, requiring him to appear in court or face a warrant for his arrest.
I spent those two days working closely with Christopher to trace every single penny of my money. We discovered that Dwight had already attempted to transfer 20,000 dollars into a separate account under Ashley’s name just hours after I left the apartment.
That transaction alone constituted clear evidence of fraudulent concealment of marital assets during an impending separation.
On the third afternoon, my phone blew up with frantic calls.
First came Dwight. I let it ring out to voicemail. Then came Susan, screaming curses through the speakerphone about how I had ruined their lives and disgraced their family name. Finally, Ryan texted a screenshot of a police notice taped to their apartment door, demanding Jared’s appearance for questioning regarding the domestic battery charges.
They had expected a submissive daughter-in-law who would quietly endure abuse and hand over her hard-earned money. Instead, they had unleashed a legal storm they were entirely unprepared to weather.
Amy sat across from me at the café, sipping her latte with a look of pure satisfaction.
“You know, Lizzie, watching you transform from a heartbroken bride into an absolute legal warrior is the best thing I’ve ever witnessed,” Amy said, laughing softly. “What’s the next move?”
“We pay them a little visit,” I replied, pulling my trench coat tighter. “Christopher filed a motion for me to retrieve my personal belongings from the family apartment under police supervision. I want every single thing I own out of that toxic house before we hit them with the full divorce complaint.”
An hour later, I stood outside the apartment door accompanied by two uniformed Baltimore police officers and Christopher’s junior associate.
When Ryan opened the door, his smug expression evaporated instantly. Behind him, Jared looked pale and furious, while Susan rushed forward with her phone out, ready to record.
“You can’t just walk in here!” Susan shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at my face.
The police officer stepped forward, resting a hand on his holster.

“Ma’am, step back. We are here to ensure a peaceful retrieval of personal property under court order. Any interference will result in immediate arrest for obstruction of justice.”
The room fell instantly silent. Jared retreated backward, his bravado completely shattered in the presence of real authority.
