Chapter 5 - The Confrontation Among the Boxes

As I packed my clothes and personal items into large suitcases with the help of the police escort, the family hovered nervously in the hallway like trapped animals.
Dwight wasn't there. According to Ryan’s nervous stuttering, Dwight was currently at the bank trying to figure out why his debit card had been declined at the ATM.
“Elizabeth, let’s talk about this like family,” Jared said, his voice dropping its previous thunderous tone, attempting a pathetic veneer of grandfatherly warmth. “A little family dispute shouldn't end a marriage. You overreacted to a few household rules, and my temper got the best of me. Drop the police charges, come back, and we can start over.”
I zipped up my final suitcase and stood up, looking him dead in the eye.
“You s:lapped me twice, Jared. You and your wife treated me like an unpaid servant, and your son planned a financial scam with his mistress before the ink on our marriage license was even dry,” I said clearly, loud enough for the police officers to hear every word. “There is no family here. There is only a nest of fraudsters.”
Susan gasped, clutching her pearls. “What are you talking about? What mistress? You’re making things up!”
I pulled out a printed copy of a still frame from the video of Dwight kissing Ashley in the hotel room, along with the text transcripts of their financial transfer plans, and tossed them onto the living room coffee table.
“Show that to Dwight when he gets back from the bank,” I said coldly. “Tell him he’ll be seeing much more of my lawyer very soon.”
As the police officers escorted me and my suitcases out of the building, I took one last look back at the apartment that was supposed to be my new beginning. The illusion was gone, replaced by the sharp, empowering clarity of truth.
That evening, Dwight finally called from an unknown number. His voice was cracked, frantic, and devoid of any lingering arrogance.
“Lizzie… please. The bank froze everything. The apartment down payment account is locked. Ashley is ignoring my calls. What did you do?”

“I did what any smart person does when someone tries to rob them,” I replied calmly. “Check your email, Dwight. Christopher just sent you the formal divorce petition and the fraud charges. See you in court.”
I hung up the phone, blocked his number permanently, and felt a profound weight lift from my shoulders. The nightmare was ending, and the reckoning had just begun.
