Chapter 6 - The Co-Conspirator Unravels

With Dwight’s financial channels completely blocked and criminal fraud investigations looming over his head, the fragile alliance holding his secret life together began to crumble with astonishing speed.

Ashley, realizing that Dwight was no longer the golden ticket to a funded lifestyle, panicked. Without my 48,000 dollars sitting securely in Dwight’s grasp, their grand scheme had imploded before it ever fully launched.

Two days after our encounter at the apartment, my phone rang with an unfamiliar number. I almost sent it to voicemail, but something prompted me to swipe answer.

“Elizabeth? Please, you have to listen to me,” a desperate, tearful voice pleaded. It was Ashley.

“Ashley. What a surprise,” I said, leaning back against the cushions of Amy’s sofa. “Did Dwight forget to pay your rent this month?”

“I was manipulated!” Ashley blurted out, her voice cracking with panic. “Dwight told me you guys were separating anyway, that you were just using him for a green card—he lied to me about everything! He said the money was legally his!”

“Is that why you helped him plan the financial transfer into your personal account?” I asked, my tone icy and devoid of sympathy. “Is that why you played the sweet, supportive maid of honor while laughing behind my back?”

There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.

“I have all the chat logs, Ashley,” I continued, driving the point home. “I have the video of you two in the hotel room talking about stealing my savings. Christopher is already adding your name to the civil conspiracy lawsuit for asset conversion and fraud.”

A sob escaped her lips. “No, please! If I get a fraud conviction, I’ll lose my job at the firm! I’ll testify against Dwight! I’ll give you everything I have on him—every text, every recorded call where he bragged about tricking you!”

I considered her offer for a moment. In legal strategy, an insider turning state’s witness is a devastating weapon.

“Talk to Christopher tomorrow morning at nine sharp,” I instructed. “Bring every single piece of communication you have with Dwight. If your cooperation is genuine and fully documented, my lawyer might consider separating your name from the primary criminal fraud indictment. But don't think for a second you're walking away completely clean.”

“I’ll do it. I’ll do whatever you want,” she whimpered before hanging up.

True to her word, Ashley sat in Christopher’s office the next morning with a trembling hand, dumping a massive digital archive of incriminating evidence onto his desk. Dwight’s web of lies wasn't just unraveling; it was burning down to ash.
