Chapter 2: The Sound of Shattered Vows

"Mary, please, it's not what you think!" the groom pleaded, taking a desperate half-step forward while frantically trying to adjust his collar. His expression morphed into a pathetic plea for mercy, completely ignoring the devastated woman trembling on the bed. Mary didn't flinch. Her emerald eyes, usually warm and expressive, hardened into chips of glacial ice. The words echoed hollowly in the grand suite—a cliché defense uttered by every guilty soul caught red-handed. How many times had this exact scene played out in cheap melodramas? Yet, experiencing it firsthand felt like a physical blow to the chest.

"Could you talk privately?" the groom muttered frantically, glancing back at the bed as if trying to shield his companion from Mary's unblinking gaze. He wanted discretion. He wanted to minimize the damage, to sweep the wreckage under the rug with hushed whispers and empty promises. But Mary felt no inclination to grant him privacy or grace. The sheer audacity of his request hung heavily in the air, a testament to his cowardice. He had blown up their future in a matter of hours, and now he wanted to handle the fallout behind closed doors like a minor business dispute.

Mary remained silent, her chest rising and falling beneath the delicate lace of her bodice. The visual of the other woman sobbing into the hotel blanket felt distant, muffled by the roaring sound of blood rushing in Mary's ears. She didn't scream. She didn't hurl vases or lunge forward in a blind rage. Instead, a chilling calmness settled over her, a terrifying stillness that far outweighed any outburst of temper. Her fiancé stopped moving, unnerved by her lack of response. He had expected screaming, weeping, or perhaps a collapse; he had not prepared for this terrifying, statuesque composure.

Slowly, deliberately, Mary's hand slid down into her silver beaded clutch. Her fingers brushed against the cool metal and glass surface of her smartphone. The contrast between the festive accessory and the grim reality of the situation was stark. With practiced calm, she withdrew the phone, her movements entirely devoid of hesitation. Her fiancé watched her, his breath catching in his throat as he realized that shouting matches were off the table. Something far more calculated was taking shape in the quiet intensity of her gaze.
