Chapter 6: The Scramble for Control

As Mrs. Ben retreated down the hallway to dismantle the grand ceremony, the groom lunged
forward, desperation finally breaking his silence. "Mary, please! You can't just cancel everything like
that! Think of our families, think of what people will say, think of the business contracts!" He reached
out, his fingers grazing the delicate lace of her sleeve before Mary jerked her arm away as if his touch
were toxic.
"Do not talk to me about business contracts or what people will say," Mary replied, her voice
dropping to a low, venomous register that made him flinch. "You traded our entire future, five years
of loyalty, and your own basic decency for a cheap liaison in a bridal suite on our wedding day. You
don't get to manage the fallout. You don't get to salvage your reputation." The sheer intensity of her
fury paralyzed him, leaving him stammering incoherently.
On the bed, the other woman began to crawl toward her scattered clothes, desperate to escape the
toxic atmosphere. "Stay where you are," Mary commanded without even looking back at her. The
woman froze, paralyzed by the commanding presence of the abandoned bride. Mary turned her full
attention back to her ruined fiancé, watching with cold fascination as his carefully constructed world
crumbled into dust around his feet. Every lie he had ever told, every subtle red flag Mary had excused
over the years, crystallized into absolute clarity.
The silence returned to the suite, heavier now that the initial shock had given way to undeniable
reality. The groom slumped against the edge of the dresser, his hands trembling as he buried his face
in his palms. The grandiose future he had envisioned—riding Mary’s family wealth into elite social

circles while maintaining his indiscretions—was completely obliterated in less than ten minutes.
