Chapter 1: The Stripped Bride

The heavy click of the boutique’s electronic front doors echoed through the high-end showroom like a gunshot. Vanessa Mercer stood frozen in the center of the three-way mirror platform, her hands still clutching the exquisite lace bodice of the Belladonna gown. The ivory fabric, which had made her feel like royalty only moments ago, suddenly felt like a tight trap.

"Claire, stop this ridiculous joke right now!" Vanessa demanded, her voice cracking as she tried to maintain her arrogant posture. "You can't have your staff touch me! I am the customer here! This gown is for my wedding on Saturday!"

Claire slowly walked across the plush cream carpet, her navy blue dress a sharp contrast to the sea of white lace surrounding them. She stopped next to Lily, gently adjusting the silk robe around her daughter’s shoulders to keep the shivering girl warm.

"You were a customer until five minutes ago, Vanessa," Claire said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "But a customer pays for their merchandise. You haven't paid a single cent for that gown. And more importantly, my company does not sell to people who abuse children."

"I am family!" Vanessa’s mother, Diane, finally scrambled off the velvet sofa, her face red with embarrassment as she waved her smartphone. "Claire, think about what you're doing! We are your family! Your late father would be disgusted by how you're treating us over a delayed credit card payment!"

Claire turned her cold gaze toward her aunt. "My father was a man of honor, Diane. He taught me to respect the craft, and he taught me to protect my children. When Vanessa took those scissors to Lily’s dress, she didn't just ruin a piece of fabric. She destroyed a custom-made, archive-quality design from my private collection. Every single pearl on that skirt was sewn by my own hands over three weeks."

The five bridesmaids stepped back, their previous laughter completely vanishing as two large security guards in black tailored suits walked past them, unfolding a high, white privacy screen around Vanessa.

"Wait! No! Don't you dare!" Vanessa screamed as the boutique manager, a tall woman named Eleanor, stepped behind the screen with an empty, heavy-duty black garment bag.

"Ms. Mercer," Eleanor said, her voice entirely professional and devoid of warmth. "Please raise your arms so I can unclip the structural corset. If you resist, the guards are authorized to remove the gown using fabric shears. We would prefer not to damage the inventory, but we will protect our corporate property."

"Mommy! Do something!" Vanessa yelled from behind the white screen. The sound of heavy zippers sliding down and structural hooks snapping open filled the quiet room. "They're stripping me! This is an assault! I’ll sue this entire boutique into bankruptcy!"

"You can't sue the owner of the brand for reclaiming her own unpaid merchandise, Vanessa," Claire said, looking down at her watch. It was 3:14 PM. "Eleanor, once the gown is secure, place it in the vacuum vault. It will need a full forensic fabric cleaning to remove any sweat or dirt from her skin. And document the damages Vanessa caused to the flower girl dress for the legal filing."

"Yes, ma'am," Eleanor replied from behind the screen.

A moment later, Vanessa was pushed out from behind the privacy screen. The $48,000 couture gown was gone, replaced by a cheap, oversized paper fitting robe provided by the boutique for delinquent clients. Her hair was messy, her makeup smeared with sweat, and her bare feet looked small and pathetic against the expensive carpet.

Diane ran over, wrapping her arms around her trembling daughter. "This is a hate crime, Claire! We are going straight to the media! The whole city will know that the famous Claire Vance treats her own relatives like thieves!"

"Please do, Aunt Diane," Claire said, handing a small tissues to Lily to wipe her tears. "Because when you call the media, I will release the high-definition security camera footage of Vanessa slicing my daughter's dress while her bridesmaids laughed. Let's see how the wedding blogs react to a bride who attacks a six-year-old child out of pure, pathetic jealousy."

Vanessa looked down at her paper robe, her body shaking with a mixture of rage and overwhelming humiliation. She realized, for the first time in her life, that she had just provoked a giant.
