Chapter 8: The Confrontation at the Penthouse

The penthouse apartment of the Mercer family was located on the 42nd floor of an ultra-luxurious stone tower on Park Avenue. Usually, the marble foyer was filled with expensive fresh flowers and the sound of classical music, but today, the space felt dark, silent, and abandoned. Stacks of packing boxes lined the hallway, and the designer furniture was covered in plastic wrap. Richard Mercer was preparing to sell the apartment to pay for his wife’s mounting legal fees.

Vanessa sat on a packing crate in the center of the living room, wearing a faded gray sweatshirt and sweatpants, her hair tangled, her face pale and greasy. She was staring blankly at a television screen displaying a live news broadcast from the financial network downtown.

“Vance Luxury Group announced this morning a total acquisition of Mercer Logistics for an undisclosed sum,” the news anchor reported. “This major move gives billionaire CEO Claire Vance complete vertical integration over her global distribution network, cementing her position as the undisputed queen of New York fashion retail...”

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical sob, throwing a heavy glass candle holder directly at the screen, shattering the glass into a million pieces. "I hate her! I hate her! She took everything from us!"

The front door clicked open loudly, and Claire walked into the apartment. She didn't have a security guard with her this time; she walked alone, her black leather boots clicking solidly against the marble floorboards. She held a thick manila folder under her arm.

Vanessa scrambled off the packing crate, her eyes wide with a wild, psychotic rage as she rushed toward her cousin. "You! How dare you walk into my house?! You ruined my life, Claire! You broke my wedding! You sent my mother to jail! You took my father's company! Are you happy now, you witch?!"

Claire didn't flinch. She stopped five feet away, looking down at Vanessa with an expression of cold, analytical pity. "You ruined your own life, Vanessa. The moment you took those silver scissors to Lily’s dress, you opened the door to your own past. Did you really think your little counterfeit fabric ring in New Jersey would stay a secret forever?"

Vanessa froze, her face turning from a fiery red to a cold, deathly white. "What... what are you talking about? What fabric ring?"

"We audited the warehouse logs, Vanessa," Claire said, opening the manila folder and tossing a stack of printed text messages onto the floorboards at Vanessa’s feet. "Your manager friend in New Jersey signed a full confession last night. The police have the bank routing numbers for the three hundred thousand dollars you laundered through your shell account. It’s grand larceny, Vanessa. Intellectual property theft on a corporate scale."

"No! No, that's a lie!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking as she tried to back away toward the window. "It was just scraps! Material that was going to be thrown in the trash anyway! You can't lock me up over some leftover silk!"

"That 'leftover silk' belonged to my company, Vanessa," Claire said, her voice dropping into an icy whisper that filled the empty room. "The legal team filed a formal lawsuit at the courthouse an hour ago. We are seeking fifty million dollars in punitive damages. Since your father has already signed over his logistics shares to clear your mother's debt, he doesn't have the funds to protect you anymore. By tomorrow morning, the federal warrant for your arrest will be executed."

Vanessa collapsed onto her knees among the scattered papers on the floor, her hands gripping her head as she wept hysterically. "Please, Claire... I beg you! Don't do this to me! I’m sorry! I’ll apologize to Lily! I’ll go on my knees in front of her! Just drop the lawsuit! I can't go to prison, Claire! I won't survive!"

"You should have thought about survival when you were laughing at a weeping six-year-old child, Vanessa," Claire said smoothly, turning her back on her cousin as she walked toward the door. "You wanted to be a queen, Vanessa. Well, now you have a new title. Federal Inmate Number 404. Enjoy your new collection."
