Chapter 5: The Empty Church

The Saturday morning sun rose over St. Patrick’s Cathedral, its bright, golden rays illuminating the massive, gothic stone columns and the heavy oak doors. Inside, the grand sanctuary was completely silent. Rows of empty wooden pews stretched out toward the altar, decorated with thousands of dollars of white roses and silk ribbons that had been arranged the evening before.
The candles were lit, the organist was waiting in the balcony, and the priest stood near the altar, checking his gold watch with a puzzled expression. It was 11:15 AM. The ceremony was supposed to start at 11:00 AM.
But there was no congregation.
The two hundred wealthy guests who had received gold-embossed invitations had all received a secondary notification on their smartphones at 8:00 AM that morning—a leaked video link from an anonymous corporate account displaying the full, unedited security footage from Claire Vance’s boutique. The clip showed Vanessa Mercer screaming and slicing a little girl's dress, followed by photos of the federal embezzlement warrants issued against her mother, Diane.
In high-society Manhattan, a child abuse scandal combined with a white-collar crime investigation was a social death sentence. Nobody wanted to be seen at the Mercer wedding.
Standing in the small, stone dressing room near the back of the church was Vanessa. She was wearing a cheap, plain white dress she had bought at a department store clearance rack the night before—the only dress in the entire city that didn't belong to a Vance subsidiary. Her hair was messy, her eyes bloodshot from forty-eight hours of continuous crying.
The door opened, and her fiancé, Alejandro, stepped inside. He wasn't wearing his wedding tuxedo; he wore a simple dark suit, and his face was cold, flat, and completely devoid of affection.
"Alejandro!" Vanessa ran to him, trying to grab his hands. "Thank God you're here! The guests... nobody is coming! My mother is still at the precinct being processed! We have to start the ceremony now, just the two of us! We can show Claire that she hasn't destroyed our love!"
Alejandro slowly pulled his hands away from her grip, stepping back toward the stone wall. "There is no ceremony, Vanessa. I’m not marrying you today. In fact, I’m never marrying you."
Vanessa froze, her breath catching in her throat as if she had been struck in the stomach. "What... what did you say? Alejandro, we’ve been together for three years! We built this life!"
"We built a lie, Vanessa," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a low, bitter register. "My family’s investment firm depends entirely on corporate contracts with Vance Luxury Group. Yesterday afternoon, Claire’s legal counsel notified my father that if I proceed with this marriage, every single contract will be terminated by Monday morning. My family will lose forty percent of our annual revenue because of your pathetic, childish tantrum at that boutique."
"It was an accident! I told you!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking as she pounded her fists against his chest. "She set me up! Claire wanted to ruin me!"
"The video doesn't lie, Vanessa," Alejandro said, shoving her away gently but firmly. "I saw the look on your face when you took those scissors to that child's dress. You weren't trimming a hem. You were being a cruel, vicious bully because you couldn't handle an eight-year-old girl looking pretty. You’re a monster, Vanessa. And I’m not going to let you drag my family name into the mud with you."
Alejandro reached into his pocket, pulled out the platinum engagement ring Vanessa had returned to him for cleaning the week before, and tossed it onto the small wooden table. It clanked loudly against the polished surface, rolling into the corner before stopping.

"Keep the ring," Alejandro said, turning his back on her as he opened the dressing room door. "You can sell it to pay for your mother’s bail. Goodbye, Vanessa."
With a firm slam, the heavy oak door shut, leaving Vanessa alone in her cheap white dress, surrounded by the empty stone walls of the cathedral, her elite life turning into dust around her feet.
