Chapter 7: The Final Audit

The central administrative offices of Vance Luxury Group occupied the top three floors of a sleek glass skyscraper overlooking Central Park. At 9:00 AM on Monday morning, the corporate boardroom was filled with senior executives, financial analysts, and corporate attorneys, all sitting around a massive mahogany table.
At the head of the table sat Claire, her laptop open, displaying a comprehensive layout of the newly acquired Mercer Logistics network. Beside her stood Mark, the company’s chief legal officer, holding a stack of verified bank statements.
"The transaction is complete, Mrs. Vance," Mark announced, his voice clear and professional. "Richard Mercer signed the buyout contract at 11:30 last night. The fifty million dollars has been deposited into an escrow account controlled by the federal court. Diane Mercer’s embezzlement debt to the foundation has been cleared in full, which means the charity has recovered its lost funds with an additional five percent interest penalty."
The executives around the table murmured with satisfaction, nodding their heads in approval.
"And what about Diane’s criminal status?" Claire asked, her face expressionless.
"The federal prosecutor has agreed to a plea bargain due to the full restitution of the stolen funds," Mark explained, shifting a document on his digital tablet. "Diane will avoid maximum security prison, but she has agreed to a mandatory sentence of three years in a low-security federal correctional facility, followed by five years of intensive financial probation. She is also permanently banned from serving on any non-profit or charitable board in the United States."
"Excellent," Claire said, closing the window on her laptop. "Aunt Diane always wanted to spend her time in an exclusive, gated community. Now she has one. What about Vanessa?"
Mark’s face hardened into a grim line. "Vanessa is currently at her parents' penthouse in Upper East Side. Her father has cut off her allowance entirely, and her department store credit cards have been canceled under the corporate blacklist protocol. But we discovered a secondary issue during the final audit of her personal accounts, Claire. It seems Vanessa wasn't just spending her mother's stolen money. She was running an illegal online resale ring using counterfeit versions of your brand’s custom fabrics."
Claire leaned forward, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Counterfeit fabrics? From my private textile mill?"
"Yes," Mark said, pulling up a series of digital invoices on the main presentation screen. "Over the past two years, Vanessa used her family access pass to enter our production facility in New Jersey. She bribed a low-level warehouse manager to smuggle out leftover silk rolls and hand-sewn lace scraps, which she then sold to a counterfeit manufacturing ring based in New Jersey for over three hundred thousand dollars in cash."
The boardroom went dead silent. The executives looked at each other in pure shock. This wasn't just a spoiled girl acting out; this was a calculated, multi-year corporate theft operation against the brand’s intellectual property.
"The warehouse manager has already been arrested and is currently cooperating with the police," Mark added. "He signed an affidavit stating that Vanessa was the mastermind behind the entire operation. He has text messages, bank routing codes, and delivery logs directly linking her to the ring."

Claire stood up from her chair, walking over to the massive glass window, looking out at the sprawling green expanse of Central Park far below. The sun was bright, but her mind was filled with a cold, absolute determination. Vanessa thought her punishment was over when her wedding was canceled and her friends left her. She didn't know that the real world was about to hit her five times harder.
"Prepare a formal civil lawsuit for patent infringement and intellectual property theft, Mark," Claire ordered, her voice a chilling whisper that echoed off the glass walls. "Demand fifty million dollars in punitive damages. If her father tries to help her using his remaining funds, let him know that we will audit his personal real estate portfolio next. Vanessa wanted a dramatic working-mom moment from me. Now she’s going to get a federal trial."
