PART 10: THE GHOST SYSTEM

PART 10: THE GHOST SYSTEM

By 6:00 a.m., the Wilmington dock was quiet again.

The black sedan was being towed away, its tires spinning uselessly against the wet gravel.

I sat in the passenger seat of Marcus’s SUV, the heater blowing warm air against my frozen hands.

"Mr. Bennett," Marcus said, handing me a fresh cup of coffee. "The federal agents are sealing the guesthouse in Charlotte as we speak. Victoria’s entire digital trail is compromised."

"The Zurich account is closed?" I asked.

"Completely liquidated," Marcus nodded. "The funds have been transferred directly into Lily’s educational trust. The Ashford family has no remaining leverage."

I looked out at the gray dawn breaking over the Atlantic.

The danger was contained, but the realization of my brother’s true past felt like a heavy stone in my chest.

He hadn't been a criminal.

He had been a victim who tried to fight a dynasty with nothing but a legal folder and a hidden camera.

"We need to return to Charlotte, Marcus," I said quietly. "The school dismissal bell chimes at three, and I promised Lily we would go to the park."

"The car is ready, sir," Marcus said, shifting the SUV into drive.

We accelerated away from the rusted shipping containers, leaving the dark water of the port behind us.

The old secrets were finally brought to light, the liars were trapped in a federal compliance audit, and our true empire was expanding.

But as I looked at the yellow folder resting on my lap, I knew that a dynasty built on stone always leaves a few cracks in the foundation.

And some cracks take years to completely fill.
