Chapter 2 – The Lost Child

The ceremony was suspended as guests quietly gathered in confusion.
Emily wrapped herself in a shawl while Ethan stood protectively beside her.
Margaret finally spoke.
Thirty years earlier, she had given birth to a baby girl.
Only two days later, the newborn disappeared from the hospital during a citywide power outage.
The police searched for months but never found her.
The only identifying feature was a butterfly-shaped birthmark beneath her left shoulder.
Before the baby vanished, Margaret had placed a tiny silver butterfly pendant around her neck—a family heirloom meant to be passed from mother to daughter.
Emily slowly touched the pendant.
"I've worn this since I was a child."
Her voice shook.
"My adoptive parents told me it was found with me."
The room became silent once again.
