Chapter 3 – A Truth Hidden for Decades
Emily's adoptive parents, who had been sitting quietly among the guests, finally stood.
Her adoptive father lowered his head.
"We never stole her."
He explained that nearly thirty years earlier, a frightened nurse had secretly handed them an abandoned infant during the chaos of the blackout.
The nurse believed the baby would be safer with a loving family than inside the corrupt system she feared.
The couple tried for years to locate the child's biological family.
They contacted attorneys.
Police departments.
Hospitals.
But the records from that night had mysteriously disappeared.
Eventually, they raised Emily as their own daughter, never hiding the fact that she had been adopted.
