Chapter 4 – The Wedding That Could Not Continue

Despite the emotional reunion, another painful truth remained.
Margaret looked at Ethan.
"If Emily is truly my daughter..."
Her voice broke.
"...then she is your sister."
The chapel filled with horrified whispers.
Emily's legs weakened.
Ethan caught her before she collapsed.
Reverend Brooks quietly stepped forward.
"No marriage can proceed until the truth is verified."
The wedding was officially postponed.
DNA testing was arranged immediately.
Three agonizing days later, the results arrived.
Everyone gathered once more.
Margaret opened the envelope with trembling hands.
The result read:
No biological relationship exists between Ethan Sullivan and Emily Carter.
The entire chapel exhaled in relief.
Margaret looked confused until investigators explained the final piece of the mystery.
Emily was indeed Margaret's biological daughter.
But Ethan had also been adopted as an infant after the death of his own biological parents.
Margaret and her late husband had adopted Ethan when he was only six months old.
They had never told him.

Emily and Ethan had grown up in separate families.
