Chapter 10 – The Legacy of Memory

Chapter 10 – The Legacy of Memory
On a quiet, overcast Sunday morning in spring, the rain fell in a soft, steady drizzle over the estate.
Alejandro walked down the winding stone path toward the secluded western corner of the grounds. This was the private sanctuary he had built years ago—a quiet garden anchored by a sculpted white marble monument of an angel, dedicated to his late daughter, Kiara.
For years, Alejandro had avoided this spot. Coming here meant facing the crushing weight of his greatest failure—the day he realized all his wealth and power could not save his little girl from a sudden, fatal allergic reaction.
Today, however, he was not alone.
Walking beside him, holding a small yellow umbrella, was Emma. She was nine now, growing taller, her face holding a bright intelligence and empathy far beyond her years. In her arm, she cradled a small bouquet of wild daffodils and blue hydrangeas she had carefully picked from the estate's greenhouse.
They stopped before the marble monument. Emma walked forward step by step, kneeling down on the wet grass. She placed the flowers gently at the base of the statue, right beside the carved inscription of Kiara's name and dates.
"Hi, Kiara," Emma said softly, her clear voice cutting through the gentle pitter-patter of the rain. "Uncle Alejandro told me it’s your birthday today. I picked these for you. I hope you have lots of sunshine where you are."
She stood up, looking at the carved marble face of the young girl she had never met, but felt she knew so well.
"I promised Uncle Alejandro that I’ll keep taking good care of him," Emma added with absolute seriousness. "And Barnaby is doing great, too."
Standing a few feet behind her, Alejandro felt a sudden tightness in his chest. For years, the memory of Kiara had been an open, bleeding wound—a shadow of guilt that defined his entire life. But watching Emma stand there, speaking to his daughter with such pure, unvarnished love, the sharp pain began to dissolve, leaving behind a gentle, warm ache.
Emma walked back to him and took his large hand, her small fingers wrapping around his palm.
"Is she listening, Uncle Alejandro?" she asked, looking up at him.
Alejandro slowly lowered himself to one knee, looking into Emma’s bright, innocent eyes. He reached out and gently wiped a drop of rain from her cheek.
"Yes, little bunny," Alejandro said, his voice thick with emotion he no longer tried to hide. "She’s listening. And she’s very happy... because she knows her home is filled with love now."

That evening, in his private study, Alejandro made a small change. For years, a single, black-framed photograph of Kiara had sat alone on his desk. He picked up a second frame—a photo taken during their trip to the coast, showing Emma laughing on the beach with salt spray in her hair—and placed it directly beside Kiara's picture.
Two daughters of his heart. One in the light of memory, one in the light of the present.
