Chapter 15 – The Lantern in the Dark
A few months before her departure for university, Emma faced her most personal challenge yet.
While volunteering at the foundation’s primary clinic in Brooklyn, she met a six-year-old boy named Leo. Leo suffered from severe, life-threatening asthma and allergies, but his mother, an undocumented worker, had been too terrified of legal repercussions to seek help until Leo collapsed in a grocery store.
Emma sat with the terrified mother in the waiting room, offering her hot tea and speaking to her in gentle, reassuring tones.
"We don't care about papers here," Emma told her softly, holding the woman's trembling hands. "We only care about making sure Leo can breathe."
When Alejandro arrived at the clinic later that evening to pick Emma up, he watched through the glass partition of the private lounge. He saw Emma kneeling beside little Leo, holding up a plush brown bear—much like she used to hold Barnaby—and making the boy laugh despite his oxygen mask.
Alejandro stood in the corridor, a profound sense of awe washing over him.
When Emma stepped out into the hallway, looking tired but radiating a quiet joy, Alejandro pulled her into a warm embrace.
"You have your mother's kindness and my determination," Alejandro whispered into her hair. "There is no combination on earth more powerful than that."

Alejandro closed his eyes, feeling the complete circle of healing that had taken sixteen years to close.
