Chapter 17 – Echoes Across the Ocean
Six months after Emma’s departure, the estate was quiet, but it was no longer lonely.
Sarah and Alejandro established a daily routine. In the mornings, they walked through the estate's vast gardens, discussing the foundation's progress. In the evenings, they sat in the study, watching the high-definition video calls coming in from London.
Emma was thriving. She was at the top of her class, and under her youthful leadership, the foundation’s European branch had already established mobile health vans serving refugee children across Eastern Europe.
One evening, during a video call, Emma held up her phone to show them her cozy London apartment. Sitting prominently on her study desk, right beside her heavy medical textbooks, was the framed drawing she had made as a five-year-old child—the picture of the giant house, the big man in the suit, and the golden rabbit under the bright sun.
"It keeps me grounded," Emma smiled through the screen. "Whenever I feel overwhelmed by exams or work, I look at it and remember where my strength comes from."
After hanging up the call, Alejandro walked over to the grand fireplace in his study. He picked up a fresh glass of wine and handed it to Sarah.

"Did you ever think we would see this day, Sarah?" he asked, looking into the warm flames.
Sarah clinked her glass against his. "I prayed for it, Alejandro. But you made it real."
