Chapter 1 - The Stage and the Slap

The bright lights of the Oakridge High School auditorium shone down on the shiny wooden stage where hundreds of parents and students sat quietly. Maya adjusted the sleeves of her favorite blue and white striped sweater while holding her breath in the backstage corner. She had spent every single night studying until her eyes burned, sacrificing weekends, social events, and sleep to achieve the highest grade point average in the district. Winning the coveted Miller Academic Trophy was not just about getting a gold medal on her chest; it was her ticket out of a home where she was treated like an unwelcome guest. Her father had remarried four years ago after her biological mother passed away, bringing Brenda and her spoiled daughter, Chloe, into their house. From that exact day, Brenda made sure Maya felt second best in every possible situation, saving all the praise, designer clothes, and expensive tutors for Chloe. Maya did not complain or throw tantrums; instead, she buried her nose in textbooks and let her academic scores speak for themselves.

When the principal stepped up to the microphone, the room fell completely silent, filled only with the faint hum of the air conditioning system. Principal Vance adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and opened the heavy blue binder resting on the wooden podium. He cleared his throat and announced Maya's name clearly over the loudspeaker, prompting a warm wave of applause from the audience. Maya took a deep breath, stepped out onto the stage, and walked toward the presentation table where the golden trophy sparkled under the spotlights. As she smiled at her former teacher, a loud commotion broke out near the front row of the seating area. Footsteps pounded heavily against the carpeted floor as a tall woman in a sleek black designer dress marched toward the wooden platform. Brenda's face was bright red with anger, her eyes fixed entirely on Maya with pure hatred as she brushed past stunned school staff members.

Before anyone could intervene or ask what was happening, Brenda reached the platform, grabbed Maya roughly by the shoulder, and pulled her around. The sound of a sharp, loud slap echoed through the entire auditorium as Brenda's palm hit Maya's cheek with tremendous force. Gasps of horror erupted from the crowd of parents, and several teachers stood up in shock. The sharp pain radiated across Maya's face, making her skin burn instantly, but she refused to drop her head or look down at the floor. Brenda pointed her French-manicured finger just inches from Maya's nose, her voice shaking with violent rage as she shouted so loud the front row shrank back in fear.

Brenda: You stole my family's moment!

Maya stood her ground despite the stinging pain in her cheek, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides as she stared straight into Brenda's furious eyes. She wiped a single stray tear from her eye before it could fall, maintaining a calm, steady posture that stunned everyone watching the scene play out. She looked Brenda right in the face without a single trace of fear, determined not to let her stepmother humiliate her in public ever again.

Maya: I earned this.

Brenda: You are a liar and a cheat! Chloe worked endlessly for this honor, and you manipulated the school system to take her place!

Maya: Check the records.
