Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at Home

Later that evening, Maya returned to her father's large suburban house to pack the remaining personal belongings from her small upstairs bedroom into three cardboard boxes. As she packed her clothes, school books, and framed photo of her late mother, the heavy wooden bedroom door swung open violently, banging against the wall. Brenda stood in the doorway with her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her face twisted into a cold, hateful glare that could chill anyone to the bone. Chloe stood right behind her mother, looking smug and holding her arms crossed as if she was waiting for a dramatic victory moment. Brenda stepped into the room, kicking one of Maya's packed boxes aside with her expensive leather shoe to show her utter disrespect.
She informed Maya that she had already spoken with her family divorce lawyer and planned to file a lawsuit against her for public defamation and emotional distress. Brenda claimed that Maya's performance on the auditorium stage had ruined her social reputation, causing her to lose her position on the local charity board. Maya did not stop packing her items; she simply placed her photo frame carefully into the top box and taped the lid down securely with heavy packing tape. She turned to face Brenda and Chloe, maintaining a completely calm expression that noticeably irritated both of them even further.
Brenda: You think you are so clever, but my lawyers will tie up that inheritance in court for years!
Maya: Go right ahead and waste your money on legal fees if you want to.
Brenda: You will not see a single dollar from that trust fund until you are thirty years old!
Maya: The attorney confirmed this morning that the account is already fully unlocked and transferred to my name.
Chloe: Mom, tell her she can't just take the family car that Dad bought last summer!
Maya: The car title is registered under my mother's name, Chloe. It was never yours to begin with.
Chloe's face dropped in anger, turning to her mother to demand that she do something to stop Maya from taking the keys lying on the wooden desk. Brenda lunged forward, trying to grab the set of car keys from Maya's desk before Maya could pick them up and put them in her pocket. But Maya was faster, snatching the keys off the smooth surface and stepping out of reach while reaching into her jacket pocket for her phone. She displayed the bright screen, showing a video recording of Brenda's violent assault on stage that had already gathered thousands of views online. The video clearly captured Brenda slapping Maya across the face and shouting abusive words in front of the entire audience of school families.
Maya: I haven't pressed criminal assault charges with the police department yet, Brenda.
Brenda: You wouldn't dare humiliate this family any further than you already have!
Maya: Try to touch my inheritance or block my car, and that video goes straight to the district police station.
Brenda: You ungrateful little brat! After everything we provided for you under this roof!
May you like
Maya: You provided nothing but coldness and cruelty, while I provided myself with a future.
Brenda stood completely frozen, realizing that pushing Maya any further would result in criminal charges that could put her behind bars or destroy her standing entirely. Chloe backed away nervously toward the hallway, realizing that her mother's usual threats and bullying tactics were completely ineffective against Maya's solid proof. Maya picked up her two heaviest cardboard boxes and walked right past the stunned pair, her chin held high as she exited the master bedroom forever. She carried her belongings down the grand staircase, where her father sat silently on the living room sofa without saying a single word to stop her departure.
