Chapter 3 - Secrets of the Estate

The security guard placed a firm hand on Brenda's arm, guiding her off the wooden platform as the crowd resumed whispering with intense energy. Maya stood tall, accepted her shiny golden trophy from Principal Vance, and smiled warmly at her supportive teachers before exiting the stage toward the hallway. As soon as she stepped through the backstage door, her father was waiting for her in the narrow corridor with a worried expression on his tired face. He walked up to her with open arms, but Maya immediately stepped back, placing a cold distance between them before he could wrap his arms around her. Her father sighed heavily, running his hand over his graying hair while looking at the bruises starting to form on her left cheekbone where Brenda had struck her.
He tried to apologize, claiming that he never intended for things to escalate to such a violent point at her big school event. Maya simply raised her hand to stop his rambling excuses, pulling a folded piece of paper out of her sweater pocket that she had been carrying for weeks. It was a formal letter from her late mother's estate attorney regarding a private trust fund established over ten years ago for her college expenses. The letter clearly stated that the funds were held in a protected bank account that could only be accessed once Maya turned eighteen or received an official academic scholarship. Brenda had been trying for months to gain legal control over that very same money, attempting to direct it toward Chloe's expensive personal expenses and upcoming private university tuition.
Maya: You knew about the legal trust fund my mom left for me, didn't you?
Father: Maya, please understand that our family was going through a very tough financial crisis last year.
Maya: So you allowed Brenda to try and take away my inheritance behind my back?
Father: She convinced me it was for the overall good of the entire household!
Maya: She wanted to erase my mother's legacy and give everything to her own daughter.
Her father remained silent, unable to meet her intense gaze as the full weight of his weakness and betrayal hung in the quiet hallway. Maya explained that the academic trophy she received today automatically triggered the release of her mother's full trust fund without needing parental permission or signatures. She no longer required her father's financial support, nor did she have to live under the constant pressure of Brenda's controlling household rules anymore. Her father reached out to touch her arm, begging her not to make any sudden decisions that would split their family apart permanently in the eyes of their friends. Maya took a step back, holding her trophy close to her chest while looking at her father with absolute clarity and determination.
Father: Please, let us go home and discuss this quietly like a normal family.
Maya: That house was never my home, and you stopped being my protector a long time ago.
Father: Where will you go? You are still young and have nowhere else to live!
May you like
Maya: I already rented a small apartment near campus using my mother's savings account.
She turned around and walked down the long tiled hallway toward the front entrance of the school building, leaving her father standing alone in the quiet corridor. The heavy glass doors clicked shut behind her as she stepped out into the bright afternoon sunlight, feeling the fresh outdoor air fill her lungs completely. She knew the fight was not entirely over yet, as Brenda would undoubtedly attempt to use legal loopholes to challenge the trust fund agreement in court. But Maya was fully prepared to fight for what belonged to her, armed with truth, evidence, and an unshakeable will to succeed on her own terms.
