Chapter 2 - The Binder of Truth

The quiet in the room became heavy and cold as Maya pointed directly toward the thick blue binder sitting on the principal's podium. Principal Vance stepped forward quickly, his hands trembling slightly as he held the official document tightly against his chest, unsure of how to diffuse the situation without causing a scene. Brenda snatched the heavy binder right out of the administrator's hands, flipping through the thick paper pages with aggressive, jerky movements while muttering insults under her breath. The audience sat in absolute silence, watching every single move as Brenda searched for the official final tally sheet that determined the winner of the district award. Her eyes scanned down the printed table of names, scores, and verified teacher signatures until her finger stopped abruptly near the top of the page. The deep red flush on her face quickly drained away, leaving her skin pale and ghostly white within seconds as the truth became clear.
The official document showed Maya's name printed neatly at the very top of the ranking list, accompanied by a perfect set of test scores and attendance records. Directly below her name was Chloe's score, which fell significantly short of the qualification limit required for the trophy and the attached college funding. Brenda stared at the numbers in complete shock, her mouth opening slightly as she tried to find a mistake or a missing calculation on the white page. Her hands began to shake as she realized that every eye in the building was fixed on her disgraceful behavior and embarrassing mistake. Maya took one step closer to her stepmother, keeping her voice clear and distinct so that the microphones caught every word she uttered.
Maya: Read the total points out loud, Brenda. Tell everyone who actually won the award based on real merits.
Brenda: This... this cannot be right. There must be a technical error in the grading software.
Maya: The panel verified those numbers three separate times yesterday afternoon.
Brenda: Your father paid for Chloe's private tutoring sessions! You had no right to compete against her!
Maya: Dad didn't pay a single cent for my education, but my hard work paid off anyway.
Principal Vance immediately stepped between the two women, taking the binder back from Brenda's limp fingers with a stern look on his face. He signaled for the campus security officer standing near the double exit doors to come forward and assist in managing the situation properly. Parents in the crowd began whispering loudly, pointing at Brenda while pulling out their mobile phones to record the unbelievable drama unfolding on stage. Brenda looked around the room in horror, suddenly aware that her high-society status and pristine reputation were crumbling in front of the entire community. She turned to look for Maya's father in the audience, expecting him to rush up and defend her honor like he usually did at home.

Instead, her husband remained seated near the back, looking down at his lap with an expression of total shame and disappointment as he realized what his wife had done. Maya felt a sudden surge of strength wash over her as she realized she was no longer the helpless teenager who had to endure emotional abuse behind closed doors. She looked at Brenda with complete composure, ready to face whatever consequences came next without bowing down to her stepmother's demands.
Maya: You can leave quietly now, or the security guards will escort you out in handcuffs.
