Chapter 5 - Justice Served

Three months later, the bright summer morning brought a cool breeze through the wide open windows of a local city courtroom downtown. Maya sat calmly at the wooden plaintiff table alongside her late mother's trusted estate lawyer, Mr. Harrison, reviewing a stack of organized legal documents. Across the room, Brenda sat stiffly next to her high-priced divorce lawyer, looking nervous and exhausted as she adjusted her expensive pearl necklace continuously. Her father sat two rows behind Brenda in the public seating area, looking isolated and tired after months of intense family fighting and public scrutiny. The judge entered the quiet room, took her seat at the high bench, and ordered everyone to sit down so the final hearing could commence.

Brenda's legal representative stood up first, arguing that the trust fund conditions were unfair and that Maya had used manipulative tactics to claim the entire sum. He requested that the judge freeze the bank accounts and divide the remaining funds equally between Maya and her stepsister, Chloe, to maintain family harmony. Mr. Harrison calmly rose from his chair, placing a certified copy of the original trust agreement along with official school records directly onto the judge's desk. He explained that all terms set by Maya's late mother had been met with complete transparency and verified academic success through the high school board. Furthermore, he presented the police report detailing the incident at the award ceremony, proving that Brenda had acted with malicious intent against the rightful heir.

Judge: The documentation provided by the plaintiff is exceptionally clear and legally binding in every aspect.

Lawyer: Your Honor, my client merely wished to protect her household's overall financial security during hard times!

Judge: Your client committed a physical assault against a minor on school grounds to steal her legitimate inheritance.

Brenda: That is an absolute lie! I was simply trying to correct an educational mistake on stage!

Judge: Silence in this courtroom, Mrs. Miller, or I will cite you for immediate contempt!

The judge slammed her wooden gavel down sharply, creating a loud sound that echoed through the high-ceilinged room and brought complete order back to the space. She ruled that the trust fund belonged entirely to Maya, ordering Brenda to pay all legal fees associated with the court case within thirty days. Additionally, the judge issued a strict restraining order preventing Brenda from contacting Maya or approaching her university campus under any circumstances in the future. Brenda sank back into her leather chair, her face pale as her legal team informed her that there was no possibility of filing an appeal. Chloe, who had attended the hearing expecting a large payout, stormed out of the court doors in deep frustration and tears.

Maya smiled softly, feeling an overwhelming wave of relief and freedom wash over her heart after months of intense stress and uncertainty. She shook hands warmly with Mr. Harrison, thanking him for his dedication to fulfilling her late mother's final wishes with such care and professionalism. As she walked out of the courtroom, her father tried to catch up to her near the marble elevators in the main lobby building. He looked at her with tears in his eyes, offering a faint, apologetic smile that showed how much he regretted letting Brenda control his life and decisions.

Father: Maya, I am so sorry for everything. I hope one day you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

Maya: I forgive you, Dad. But I am moving forward with my life now.

Father: Will I ever see you again?

Maya: Maybe one day when you decide to stand up for yourself too.
