Chapter 2: The Shock

The courtroom fell into stunned silence.

Julian’s smug expression vanished. His face went pale, then red.

The judge, who had been so dismissive moments earlier, straightened in her seat.

Eleanor Sterling didn’t even glance at Julian. She kept her eyes on me, her hand still gently touching my cheek.

“I’ve been looking for you for twenty-seven years,” she said softly. “I never stopped.”

Tears spilled down my face before I could stop them.

I had spent my entire life believing I was an orphan. I had no memory of parents. No family. No one had ever come for me.

And now the most powerful woman in the country was standing in front of me, claiming I was her daughter.

Julian finally found his voice.

“This is ridiculous,” he snapped. “Clara has no family. She’s been lying to everyone!”

Eleanor finally turned to him. Her smile was ice.

“Mr. Hale, I suggest you sit down and remain silent. You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

She turned back to me.

“Come with me, Clara. We have a lot to talk about. And we need to make sure my grandchild is safe.”

She placed a protective hand on my very pregnant belly.

Julian’s eyes widened in pure panic.
