Chapter 2

The Shattered Gala
Before Eleanor’s private security team could move, a tall man in a sharp black tuxedo stepped between Clara and the approaching guards. It was Arthur Vance, Eleanor’s eldest nephew and the chief legal counsel for the family’s global enterprise. His face was entirely grim.
"Stand down," Arthur commanded the security team, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no argument. He turned his sharp, calculating gaze toward his aunt. "Eleanor, if what this woman is saying is completely false, why is your security team trying to suppress her instead of calling the police to file a formal trespass report?"
"Arthur! You would take the word of an unhinged, penniless girl over your own aunt?" Eleanor hissed, her hands trembling as she adjusted her diamond bracelet. "This gala is celebrating our corporate merger. If this scandalous nonsense hits the press, the stock will plummet by morning!"
"It’s already hit the press, Eleanor," a voice called out from the back of the room.
Julian Carter, an independent investigative journalist who had been tipped off by Clara weeks ago, held up his tablet. A live-stream of the entire confrontation was broadcasting to over two million viewers online. The comments section was moving faster than the eye could follow, flooded with public outrage and demands for a criminal investigation.
Realizing the narrative was spinning completely out of her control, Eleanor took a step toward Clara, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper. "You think you’ve won, Clara? You’re an orphan with a history of documented psychiatric care—care that I paid for. No court in this country will take a child away from the Vance estate based on the ramblings of a five-year-old."

"We'll see about that, Eleanor," Clara said, her voice stabilizing as she shielded Leo behind her back. "I didn't just come here to shout the truth. I brought the proof."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom opened once more, and two federal agents in dark suits walked down the center aisle, their badges glinting under the crystal chandeliers.
