Chapter 9

The Fall of the Tyrant

Clara stopped, raising her bleeding hands in the air to signal Arthur and the snipers to hold their fire. She looked past Eleanor’s terrified face, straight into the eyes of her little boy.

"Leo," Clara called out, her voice dropping to a calm, beautifully steady tone that defied the chaos of the wind and rain. "Do you remember the story I told you at the park? About the little bird who found his way back to the highest branch?"

Leo stopped crying, his small eyes widening as the familiar words broke through his panic. "The... the bird who wasn't afraid of the storm?" he whispered.

"Yes, baby," Clara smiled through her tears. "The bird wasn't afraid because he knew his mommy was waiting at the bottom. Jump, Leo. Trust Mommy. Jump!"

With a sudden surge of bravery, Leo bit down hard on Eleanor’s wrist.

Eleanor shrieked in pain, her grip loosening for a fraction of a second. Leo broke free, throwing himself forward onto the wet concrete. At that exact moment, Clara lunged forward, sliding across the slippery ground and catching her son in her arms, shielding his small body with her own as they rolled away from the aircraft.

Eleanor staggered backward, her high heels losing their grip on the wet, oil-slicked concrete near the edge of the helipad. She reached out blindly for support, but her hand caught only empty air. With a final, terrified scream that was completely swallowed by the roar of the engines, she slipped over the edge of the mountain retaining wall, falling into the dark, rocky ravine below.

The helicopter pilot, seeing the total collapse of his employer's operation, cut the engines immediately, raising his hands in total surrender as Marcus and the arriving federal agents flooded the helipad.
