Chapter 6

The Darkest Hour
The legal battle turned brutal over the next three weeks. Eleanor, refusing to go down without a fight, leaked Clara’s private medical files from Briarcliff to the press. Headlines screamed across social media, questioning whether a woman with a history of severe psychological trauma should be handed control of a five-year-old child and a multi-billion-dollar fortune.
The public opinion began to waver. People loved a scandal, but they loved a controversial debate even more.
One evening, Clara was sitting in the safehouse when Leo walked up to her, holding a small drawing he had made at school. It was a picture of two figures holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.
"Is this us, Leo?" Clara asked softly, her eyes stinging.
"Yes," Leo said, looking up at her with pure, innocent trust. "Grandma Eleanor used to tell me that bad people would try to take me away. But when I'm with you, I don't feel scared. Why are the people on the television saying you're sick, Mommy?"
Clara’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. She pulled him into her lap, holding him tight. "Mommy isn't sick, sweetheart. Mommy was just very sad because she lost you for a long time. But I'm well now, and I’m never going to let anyone separate us again."
Suddenly, the glass windows of the penthouse living room shattered inward.
A flashbang grenade detonated with a blinding white light and a deafening roar. Armed operatives in black tactical gear, hired by Eleanor’s remaining underground contacts, poured through the broken balcony doors. Before Clara could recover her senses from the blast, a heavy hand caught her by the hair, throwing her violently to the floor.
"Get the boy! Move, move, move!" a raspy voice shouted through a radio.

Clara screamed, dragging herself forward across the broken glass, her hands bleeding as she reached for Leo’s leg. "No! Don't take him! Don't take my son!"
But the operatives were too fast. They scooped the terrified, screaming child into a black transport bag and vanished over the balcony, rappelling down to a waiting unmarked vehicle in the dark alley below.
