Chapter 7

The Hunt in the Fog
When Arthur and Marcus rushed into the penthouse ten minutes later, they found Clara on her knees amid the glass shards, her hands covered in blood, staring blankly out at the rainy New York skyline.
"They took him," Clara whispered, her voice dangerously calm, the shock completely numbing her pain. "She took him again."
Arthur knelt beside her, checking the digital tracking screen on his phone. "They didn't get far. When I moved you to this penthouse, I secretly placed a micro-tracking device inside Leo’s silver pocket watch—the one his father left him. They’re moving north toward the Adirondack estate. Eleanor has a private helipad there."
"She’s trying to take him out of the country," Marcus realized, his hand moving to the weapon concealed beneath his jacket. "If she gets him past the Canadian border on a private flight, the international custody laws will tie us up for years."
Clara stood up, wiping the blood from her palms onto her dress. The fear that had paralyzed her for five years vanished, replaced by a cold, primordial maternal instinct. "We're not waiting for the FBI. We're going now."

The rain turned into a blinding, thick fog as Arthur’s armored SUV roared up the mountain roads toward the secluded Vance compound. Clara sat in the front seat, her eyes fixed on the glowing red dot on the tracking screen.
"She thinks money can buy everything," Clara muttered, her fingers tightening around the silver locket her father had given her. "She thinks she can buy my son’s life. Tonight, I’m going to show her what happens when you try to take a child from a mother who has nothing left to lose."
