Chapter 12: A Fortress of Paper

The following morning, the reality of Eleanor’s threat became painfully clear. Claire sat in the small back office of the Arts Center, surrounded by legal documents that seemed to multiply by the hour. Eleanor hadn’t just filed for custody; she had launched a full-scale legal assault designed to drain Claire’s finances and break her spirit.
Marcus Vance pushed open the door, holding two steaming cups of coffee. He set one down in front of Claire, his expression grim but resolute. Marcus had been Claire’s rock for the past year—a brilliant former corporate attorney who had left the cutthroat legal world to teach music at the center. Over the months, their friendship had blossomed into a quiet, profound romance.
"I’ve read through the filings," Marcus said, pulling up a chair and taking Claire’s trembling hand in his warm grasp. "It’s a classic intimidation tactic. Eleanor is claiming that the environment here is 'unstable' and that your decision to keep the Bennett name is a calculated act of defamation against her family."
"She’s a monster, Marcus," Claire whispered, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. "She knew exactly what Richard was doing. She funded his legal defense when he tried to ruin me. And now she wants to take Lily. If she gets her hands on my daughter, she’ll turn her into a hollow, frightened shell."
"She is not taking Lily," Marcus said fiercely, his thumb tracing soothing circles on her knuckles. "I know Eleanor’s lawyers. They’re vicious, but they rely on fear. We have something they don’t—the truth. But we need to be prepared, Claire. Eleanor fights dirty. She won’t just attack you in court; she’ll attack you in the court of public opinion."
As if on cue, Vanessa, Claire’s best friend and the center’s event coordinator, burst into the office. Her face was flushed with anger, and she was holding up her smartphone.
"You guys need to see this," Vanessa said, her voice shaking. "It’s all over Facebook and the local neighborhood groups. Someone is spreading lies about the Arts Center."
Claire took the phone. The headline of a sponsored post glared back at her: “Charity or Scam? The Dark Truth Behind the Bennett & Daughter Arts Center.” The article, written by an anonymous 'concerned citizen', alleged that Claire was embezzling donation money to fund a lavish lifestyle while neglecting the children in her care.

"It’s already got hundreds of shares," Vanessa said, looking devastated. "Parents are calling. They’re threatening to pull their kids from the after-school programs."
Claire felt the room spin. Eleanor was trying to destroy the only means Claire had of supporting her daughter. If the center failed, Eleanor could easily prove that Claire was financially unstable. The trap was closing in.
