Chapter 26: The Reckoning

The massive public outcry forced the city council to move their public hearing on Thorne’s zoning injunction to the city’s largest auditorium to accommodate the hundreds of citizens demanding to be heard.
Julian Thorne sat at the defense table with his team of high-powered attorneys, looking visibly rattled by the swarm of news cameras and protesting citizens lining the streets outside.
When the head of the city council called the meeting to order, Marcus stepped up to the podium, carrying a black leather binder.
"Members of the council," Marcus spoke calmly, his tone carrying the authority of a lawyer fighting for justice. "Julian Thorne claims our center violates local zoning ordinances. But today, we present evidence that Mr. Thorne himself engaged in illegal land manipulation and financial bribery to force this re-zoning."
Marcus opened the binder, presenting documented bank transfers uncovered by Vanessa’s tireless forensic work, tracing payments from Crestview’s shell companies directly to the private accounts of two disgraced former zoning board members.
Gasps filled the courtroom. Thorne stood up angrily, his lawyer frantically trying to pull him back down. "This is preposterous! These documents are fabricated!" Thorne shouted.
"They are certified public records from the State Department of Revenue, Mr. Thorne," Marcus replied smoothly, turning to face him. "And state investigators are currently executing a search warrant on your corporate headquarters as we speak."
Two state police officers entered the back of the courtroom, standing silently near the exits.
The city council chairman struck his gavel repeatedly. "Order in the court! In light of this evidence, this council hereby rejects the zoning injunction against the Vance Family Center for the Arts indefinitely. Furthermore, this matter is referred immediately to the District Attorney's office."

The courtroom erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. Local business owners embraced each other, and Vanessa threw her arms around Marcus.
Thorne was escorted out of the building by state investigators, his multi-million dollar corporate empire crumbling under the weight of his own hubris.
