Chapter 13: The Smear Campaign

Chapter 13: The Smear Campaign

The next week was a nightmare of public relations and private panic. Eleanor’s invisible hand was everywhere. The local community, which had once championed Claire, was suddenly fractured. Suspicion grew like a weed.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, only half of the children showed up for the afternoon art sessions. Claire stood by the window, watching parents hurry past the center without making eye contact. Her heart ached for the kids who were missing out, but it ached even more for Lily, who sensed the tension in her mother.

Lily tugged on Claire’s sweater, holding up a drawing of a dark, swirling tornado with two small stick figures holding hands in the center. "Mommy, why are the other kids not coming to play? Did we do something wrong?"

Claire dropped to her knees, pulling Lily into a fierce hug. She smoothed her daughter's dark hair, kissing her forehead. "No, baby. We didn't do anything wrong. Sometimes, when people are unhappy, they try to blow down other people's houses. But remember what we said? Our house is made of bricks."

"And love," Lily added softly, resting her chin on Claire's shoulder.

"Exactly. And love," Claire affirmed, though her voice shook.

Later that night, after Lily was asleep, Claire sat on her living room floor, surrounded by financial ledgers, crying silently. She was running out of money for the legal retainer. The center’s donations had dried up entirely.

Marcus let himself in with his spare key, finding her broken on the floor. He didn't speak; he simply sat down beside her, wrapped his arms around her, and let her cry into his chest.

"I can't lose her, Marcus," she sobbed. "I can't let Eleanor win."

"We're going to fight back," Marcus said, his voice a low, steady rumble of absolute conviction. "I’ve been making calls to some of my old colleagues. Eleanor is throwing millions around to crush you, but money leaves a paper trail. If she’s playing dirty, she’s made a mistake. We just have to find it."
