Chapter 17: The Courtroom Resolution

Though Eleanor dropped the custody suit, the legal system still demanded closure for the defamation and the financial crimes. A month later, Claire found herself in a bright, wood-paneled courtroom for Eleanor Bennett’s preliminary hearing.
Eleanor looked nothing like the terrifying matriarch she had once been. Without her wealth to shield her, she appeared frail, her posture hunched, her designer clothes hanging loosely on her frame. The federal prosecutors laid out a devastating case: wire fraud, embezzlement, and attempting to illegally access a minor’s trust fund.
Claire sat in the gallery, holding Marcus’s hand. She felt no vindictiveness, only a profound sense of relief. The monster under the bed had finally been dragged into the light, and it was just a sad, greedy woman who had sacrificed her family on the altar of her own ego.
When the judge formally issued a permanent restraining order protecting Claire and Lily from any member of the Bennett family, and stripped Eleanor of any rights to the trust, Claire let out a breath she felt she had been holding for years.
Outside the courthouse, the crisp spring air felt like a baptism.
"It's over," Marcus said softly, wrapping an arm around Claire's shoulders as they walked down the marble steps. "It's really, finally over."
"She has nothing left," Claire observed, feeling a strange, quiet pity. "All that power, and she destroyed herself trying to take the one thing she couldn't buy."

"Love," Marcus smiled.
"Love," Claire agreed. She looked up at the bright blue sky, entirely free of clouds. The name Bennett no longer held any power over her. It was just a word. She was Claire, and she was entirely free.
