Chapter 13 - Evelyn Runs

Evelyn did not reach the parking garage.

Military Police caught her inside a service kitchen.

She still carried the gala ledger inside her evening bag.

Twenty-seven million dollars in planned transfers.

Ghost identities.

Names.

Payments.

Enough to destroy careers.

She requested a lawyer immediately.

Claire was found in a storage room.

One wrist bruised.

No severe injuries.

She refused medical care until she saw Lisa.

They met hours later.

Claire looked exhausted.

“I took money.”

Lisa said nothing.

“Twenty thousand.”

“When?”

“Seven months ago.”

“Why?”

Claire cried.

“My brother’s business was failing.”

“I thought Ryan wanted help pushing you toward a merger.”

“I told myself it wasn’t theft if the company remained valuable.”

Lisa stared at her.

“You helped create a plan to remove me.”

“Yes.”

“Then when did you change sides?”

“When Evelyn asked for client-access lists.”

Claire looked up.

“I realized it wasn’t corporate.”

“I started copying files.”

Lisa felt nothing clear.

Anger.

Betrayal.

Grief.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because then I’d have to admit what I did.”

There it was.

Not noble investigation.

Cowardice mixed with repair.

Human.

Ugly.

Claire continued.

“I am sorry.”

Lisa looked at her.

“I believe you.”

Claire’s face lifted.

“That doesn’t mean I trust you.”

Claire nodded.

“I know.”

Investigators later confirmed Claire had secretly preserved several documents that would otherwise have been destroyed.

Her cooperation mattered.

So did her original involvement.

Both could be true.

Meanwhile, Nathan vanished.

The underground garage cameras showed him entering a utility tunnel connecting the gala venue to an adjacent building.

Police searched for hours.

Nothing.

Then Michael called Lisa.

“You need to come home.”

“Why?”

“I found something in Dad’s archive.”

“What?”

“A letter from Thomas Bennett.”

Ryan’s father.

Written three days before the crash.

Addressed to Evelyn.

The first line.

Thomas had known his wife was dangerous.

The hero story was collapsing in every direction.
