Chapter 5 - Ryan Knew Before the Wedding

Ryan requested a lawyer.

That lasted four hours.

Then he asked to speak to Lisa alone.

Marcus refused.

Lisa agreed to speak with him in an interview room with recording active.

Ryan sat across from her.

No suit.

No decorated-officer posture.

Just a tired man she no longer recognized.

“When did you know Michael was my brother?”

Ryan looked down.

“Before our first date.”

Lisa’s throat tightened.

“How much before?”

“A few months.”

“So meeting me wasn’t an accident.”

“No.”

The word landed cleanly.

Lisa stared.

Ryan continued.

“My mother knew who you were.”

“She knew your father’s company had become yours.”

“She knew you had defense clients.”

“She thought your cybersecurity access might eventually help find where Michael had stored evidence.”

Lisa laughed once.

“You married me for my servers?”

“It didn’t start as love.”

Ryan’s voice broke.

“But it became love.”

Lisa leaned back.

“Do not use love to make this smaller.”

He closed his eyes.

“You’re right.”

“Who arranged our first meeting?”

“Claire’s old boyfriend.”

Lisa froze.

“He worked with Mother.”

“Claire didn’t know then.”

Lisa thought back.

The charity auction.

Ryan accidentally bumping into her near the coat check.

The joke about bad champagne.

The phone call the next morning.

All of it suddenly looked staged.

“You knew my brother was alive?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I knew there was a witness tied to your family.”

“Mother never told me it was Michael until after we were engaged.”

“And you still married me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ryan looked at her.

“Because by then I did love you.”

Lisa felt anger rise.

“Then why hide four hundred thousand dollars?”

His face changed.

“Mother said the money was needed to keep old Army families quiet.”

“You believed her?”

“At first.”

“Then?”

Ryan swallowed.

“I realized some of it was moving through ghost accounts.”

“Dead soldiers.”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing.”

“I was afraid.”

Lisa stared at him.

“You were a decorated Army officer.”

“You gave speeches about courage.”

“I know.”

“Yet your mother hit me and you looked at your phone.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

The silence stretched.

Then Lisa asked.

“What is the gala?”

Ryan stiffened.

There.

She saw it.

Fear.

“The charity gala Evelyn wanted five thousand dollars for.”

Ryan did not answer.

Lisa leaned forward.

“What happens at the gala?”

Ryan whispered.

“It isn’t a fundraiser.”

“What is it?”

“A transfer event.”

“For what?”

He looked at the camera.

Then at Lisa.

“Identity packages.”

“Financial access.”

“Military survivor benefits.”

“People buy clean histories.”

Lisa felt cold.

Dead soldiers’ identities.

Used as commodities.

Then Ryan said.

“And this year’s main package is Michael’s.”
