Chapter 17 - Claire’s Truth

Claire did not defend herself this time.

She sat at the old kitchen table and told the full story.

She found the drive two days after buying the house.

She watched the video.

She realized Evelyn had helped arrange the crash.

She panicked.

Instead of going to Lisa or authorities, she copied the file and hid the original again.

Then she approached Evelyn.

“Why?”

Lisa asked.

Claire looked ashamed.

“I wanted leverage.”

Money.

There it was.

Claire threatened Evelyn indirectly.

Evelyn understood.

She paid Claire.

At first twenty thousand.

Then another fifty.

Claire told herself she was gathering evidence.

But she also used the money to save her brother’s company.

Lisa felt numb.

“You blackmailed the woman who murdered my brother’s unit.”

Claire cried.

“Yes.”

“And called yourself my best friend.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever plan to tell me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Claire had no answer.

Lisa stood.

“We’re done.”

Claire nodded.

“I know.”

Her later cooperation would matter in court.

But Lisa’s personal decision was separate.

Not every betrayal needed reconciliation.

Some apologies could be accepted from a distance.

Investigators arrested Claire on charges related to concealment, conspiracy, and financial misconduct.

She surrendered voluntarily.

Then Nathan made his final mistake.

He called Evelyn.

The jail recorded it.

“You kept the girl too close.”

Nathan said.

Evelyn answered.

“Lisa was never supposed to discover Michael.”

“You should have killed him years ago.”

Silence.

Then Nathan said.

“I tried.”

Evelyn whispered.

“And failed.”

The call revealed Nathan’s location through a routing error.

A rural airfield outside Colorado Springs.

He was preparing to leave.

Military Police.

Federal agents.

State police.

All moved.

Lisa stayed behind.

For once, she did not need to be in the room where the dangerous man was caught.

She had spent years solving threats.

This one belonged to the people with warrants.

At 3:17 a.m., Marcus called.

“They have him.”

Lisa closed her eyes.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Michael sat beside her.

His shoulders dropped.

For twenty-two years, he had been looking over his shoulder.

Now the man who built the network was in custody.

Lisa asked.

“What did Nathan say?”

May you like

Marcus almost laughed.

“He asked for a lawyer.”
