Chapter 16 - The Childhood House

Claire admitted it immediately.

“Evelyn told me to buy it.”

Lisa stared.

“You bought my childhood home for her?”

“Through a shell company.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She thought your father hid something there.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“No.”

Claire looked ashamed.

“I thought I could find it first.”

Lisa laughed bitterly.

“You really do love investigating things after betraying me.”

Claire accepted it.

They searched the house under warrant.

Lisa had not stepped inside in fifteen years.

The kitchen looked different.

The walls had been painted.

Her old bedroom belonged to a teenage boy now.

But one thing remained.

The basement workbench.

Michael smiled.

“Dad never trusted digital storage alone.”

They removed the back panel.

Inside was a military-grade data cartridge.

Old.

Encrypted.

Marcus transferred it carefully.

The contents were devastating.

Thomas Bennett’s original financial records.

Nathan’s account architecture.

Evelyn’s payment instructions.

Military contracting officers.

Civilian accomplices.

And one video.

Nathan Cole.

1998.

He looked younger.

Confident.

He spoke to Evelyn inside what appeared to be a hotel room.

“The crash solves Margaret.”

“Thomas too if he gets on the aircraft.”

Evelyn asked.

“And Daniel?”

Nathan shrugged.

“Witnesses are unfortunate.”

Lisa stopped breathing.

There it was.

The plot.

On video.

Evelyn knew.

Participated.

The crash had not been an accident.

Then the video continued.

Evelyn said.

“Ryan cannot know.”

Nathan answered.

“He’ll grow up with a dead hero.”

“Children believe what mothers repeat.”

Lisa felt sick.

Ryan’s entire identity had been constructed.

Then Nathan smiled.

“And if one day he becomes useful, we use him.”

Evelyn did not object.

Lisa looked at Michael.

“This is enough.”

He nodded.

“To finish the old case.”

Not Nathan.

Because Nathan was still moving.

Then Lisa noticed metadata.

The video file had been opened recently.

Six months earlier.

By a user.

C.DONOVAN.

Lisa turned toward Claire.

Claire went pale.

“You saw this.”

Claire whispered.

“Yes.”

“Six months ago?”

“Yes.”

“And you still worked with Evelyn.”

Claire started crying.

Lisa stepped back.

That was the end.

May you like

Not of the investigation.

Of the friendship.
