Chapter 14 - Thomas Bennett’s Letter

Thomas’s letter was eight pages.
It read like a confession.
He admitted helping Nathan Cole create the first ghost accounts.
He justified it at first as operational necessity.
Money for covert assets.
Emergency movement.
Untraceable support.
Then the system expanded.
Nathan monetized it.
Thomas participated.
Evelyn discovered it.
Instead of exposing them, she demanded a share.
Margaret Vale opened the investigation.
Michael became her financial witness.
Thomas panicked.
Then he decided to cooperate.
He wrote to Evelyn.
You think this protects Ryan.
It does not.
If he grows up believing our lies, we will have made him weaker than the truth ever could.
Lisa stopped reading.
Ryan sat in federal detention while his dead father’s words described him perfectly.
Thomas continued.
Nathan has already threatened Daniel.
Margaret is right.
The network must end.
I will testify.
If anything happens to me, look at Evelyn’s charity accounts.
The Patriot Legacy Fund existed before Thomas died.
Evelyn had built it as a channel for her share.
Michael looked at Lisa.
“Dad never saw this?”
“No.”
“It was sealed in the archive.”
“Why would your father have it?”
Michael examined the envelope.
Thomas had mailed it to Lisa and Michael’s father.
They had known each other.
Another secret.
Their father had been Thomas’s civilian accountant.
That explained more.
He helped follow the money.
He knew Michael survived.
He knew Evelyn threatened Lisa.
The families had been connected long before Lisa met Ryan.
The arranged marriage was not merely opportunistic after Michael’s message.
Evelyn had been watching Lisa’s family for decades.
Lisa whispered.
“She always knew where I was.”
Michael nodded.
“She knew your company became valuable.”
“She knew marrying Ryan to you could solve multiple problems.”
“Access.”
“Money.”
“Control over Dad’s archive.”
Lisa closed the letter.
“What about Nathan?”
Michael looked grim.
“Thomas says Nathan had an emergency identity.”
“Name?”
“Peter Nolan.”
They knew that.
Michael continued.
“And a secondary safe house.”
“Where?”
“Fort Carson.”
Military property.
That changed everything.
Nathan had access to a concealed location inside or near an Army installation.
Marcus obtained the old coordinates.
An abandoned communications bunker once used for continuity exercises.
The Army had decommissioned it.
Or believed it had.
By midnight, investigators surrounded the site.
Inside, they found servers.
Documents.
Weapons.
And photographs of Lisa.
Years of them.
Nathan had been watching her since before her wedding.
But Nathan was gone.
On one desk was a fresh note.
ONE FAMILY LEFT TO CLEAN.
