Chapter 13 - The House Where We Learned Fear

I heard the gunshot through the monitoring equipment.
Then silence.
Mara ordered me to remain behind the vehicles.
I ignored her and moved with the second team.
The front windows were dark.
Agents entered through the kitchen and east hallway.
I knew another way.
As children, Celia and I used a narrow servants’ passage behind the library wall.
Our mother called it the secret road.
Our father had ordered it sealed during renovations.
I found the hidden panel beneath the staircase.
The latch still worked.
Inside, dust covered the narrow passage.
I moved through darkness until I reached the library wall.
Nolan’s voice came through the panel.
“Tell the agents to withdraw.”
Celia answered.
“They cannot hear me.”
“Then scream.”
Mercer paced near the fireplace.
“We need to leave now.”
Nolan kept the gun against Celia.
“The aircraft is not ready.”
“The FBI arrested Voss.”
“Voss was weak.”
“He knew the names.”
“He knew some names.”
Mercer lowered his voice.
“The Council will erase all of us.”
The Council.
The network had a name.
Celia asked, “Who are they?”
Neither man answered.
I opened the panel slowly.
Celia saw me first.
Her expression did not change.
She kept Nolan’s attention on her.
“You need me alive,” she said.
“Your signature is still attached to the foundation transfers.”
“Then you should have behaved more intelligently.”
“You picked me because you thought I was weak.”
“I picked you because you were hungry.”
“For what?”
“To matter more than your sister.”
The words struck her.
For years, Nolan and my father had used the same wound.
Celia looked toward the dark window.
Then she said, “I already matter more than you ever will.”
She drove her heel down on Nolan’s foot and dropped.
I burst through the panel.
Nolan fired.
The bullet struck the wall beside me.
Mercer turned his weapon.
I threw the metal fireplace tool I had grabbed from the passage.
It hit his arm.
His shot went into the ceiling.
Agents crashed through the doors.
Nolan seized Celia again.
She slammed the back of her head into his face.
He released her.
I reached him before he recovered.
We hit the floor.
The gun slid beneath a chair.
Nolan struck my ribs.
I trapped his arm and forced him down.
He laughed through the blood on his mouth.
“You think arresting me changes anything?”
“No.”
I tightened my grip.
“But it improves my evening.”
Mara pulled me back as agents handcuffed him.
Mercer surrendered.
Celia sat against the wall, breathing hard.
The bullet had only torn through her coat.
She looked at me.
“You came through the secret road.”
“You remembered.”
“I remembered everything.”
Agents searched the house.
Mercer carried flight plans and encrypted drives.
Nolan carried three passports.
In the basement, investigators found boxes my father had stored there after our mother’s death.
One contained Andrew’s childhood belongings.
Another contained letters he had written from Northbridge.
None had been mailed.
The first letter asked my mother to visit him.
The second said doctors were forcing him to take medication.
The final letter was addressed to Celia and me.
We had been too young to read when he wrote it.
My little sisters, if you ever learn my name, please know I did not leave you.
Dad made me disappear because I found out what he was doing.
Do not believe him when he says fear is love.
Celia sat on the basement floor holding the letter.
“I spent my whole life thinking Dad protected us.”
“He trained us to confuse protection with control.”
“I did the same thing to you.”
“You can choose what you do next.”
She wiped her face.
“What happens next?”
“Truth.”
“Court.”
“Consequences.”
Celia nodded.
Then Mercer called from the stairs.
“You still do not understand.”
Agents pushed him forward in handcuffs.
He looked directly at me.
“The Council has judges.”
“Prosecutors.”
“Generals.”
“People who decide which investigations live and which ones disappear.”
Mara stepped closer.
“Give us names.”
Mercer smiled bitterly.
“I will give them to a grand jury.”
“If I survive the night.”
Before dawn, Mercer was placed inside a secure federal transport.
The vehicle left the Warren estate with an armed escort.
Sixteen miles later, a truck crossed the highway and struck it.
The transport rolled twice.
Mercer survived the crash.

But when rescuers opened the rear compartment, his seat was empty.
Someone had taken him before the authorities arrived.
