Chapter 8 - The Second Door

Police evacuated the Vale estate.

Dominic entered the basement with Lucas, Serena, and a federal search team.

The hidden room had been cleared after Mia’s rescue.

Forensic technicians found blood, rope fibers, and Claire’s fingerprints.

Nothing explained why Nathan would risk returning.

Mia stood at the entrance.

“Something was behind me.”

“What?” Serena asked.

“While I was trapped, I heard a humming sound through the wall.”

“Every six hours, it stopped.”

“Then started again.”

Lucas scanned the concrete.

A power line ran behind the western panel.

The room had a second concealed door.

It opened with a biometric reader hidden beneath the floor trim.

Nathan’s fingerprint would have activated it.

Federal technicians bypassed the system.

Behind the door was a climate-controlled archive.

Rows of servers lined the walls.

File cabinets filled the center.

The Vale estate had contained Nathan’s private intelligence center.

He listened to Dominic’s calls.

Copied company documents.

Collected medical records.

Stored blackmail.

Every crisis Nathan appeared to solve had first been monitored from beneath Dominic’s home.

One cabinet held replacement passports.

Another contained cash and weapons.

The final row carried names.

Each drawer held the private file of someone connected to Vale Industries.

A drawer labeled DOMINIC VALE contained childhood records, therapy notes, love letters, business strategies, and photographs taken through windows.

Nathan had been studying him long before they became friends.

Dominic found a boarding-school report from seventeen years earlier.

Nathan had written observations in the margin.

Responds strongly to loyalty.

Fears abandonment.

Protects people who appear dependent.

Their friendship had begun as an assessment.

Mia opened a drawer labeled with her name.

Inside were her employment records, banking information, Harper’s school forms, and photographs of them inside their apartment.

Nathan had chosen Mia as part of the household because her financial situation made her easier to threaten.

She had not entered the Vale family by accident either.

A file on Claire described her need for status and fear of returning to poverty.

A file on Elena described her persistence as a risk.

A file on Harper carried one sentence.

Observant child.

Monitor closely.

Harper had been four when Nathan wrote it.

Serena found the red book’s digital backup on one server.

But the files were encrypted.

The physical book contained the access codes.

A motion alarm sounded upstairs.

Someone had entered the estate through an old service tunnel near the river.

Nathan had reached the property.

Federal agents spread through the house.

Dominic remained in the underground archive.

Mia took Harper toward the secure exit.

Then the steel doors closed automatically.

The lights changed to red.

Nathan’s voice came through hidden speakers.

“Welcome to the room beneath your life, Dominic.”

Dominic looked toward the cameras.

“You should have kept sailing.”

“The yacht was useful bait.”

“Where are you?”

“Closer than you think.”

A gas began hissing through the ceiling vents.

Mia covered Harper’s mouth with her sleeve.

Serena pulled the emergency alarm.

Nothing happened.

Nathan had sealed the archive.

“You locked Mia in the outer room because she found the ledger,” Dominic said.

“What was this room for?”

“For the day you stopped being useful.”

Nathan sounded almost amused.

“Claire was supposed to marry you.”

“After your accident, she would transfer company authority.”

“Then she would join Elena.”

“And Harper?”

“Children adapt.”

Mia shouted toward the camera.

“You could not control her.”

“No.”

“That was unexpected.”

Harper looked toward the red emergency lights.

Then she pointed beneath the server desk.

A small vent sat near the floor.

“Mouse door,” she whispered.

She had noticed it when entering.

Lucas removed the cover.

The opening led into a maintenance shaft.

It was too small for most adults.

But Harper could fit.

Mia knelt in front of her.

“You do not have to.”

Harper looked at the gas filling the ceiling.

“Yes.”

“You follow the yellow pipes,” Lucas said.

“They lead to the emergency controls.”

“Find the red handle.”

“Pull it down.”

Harper entered the shaft.

Mia watched her disappear.

The child crawled through darkness while Nathan continued speaking through the cameras.

He did not know she had escaped the room.

Harper followed the pipes.

At the end, she found the red handle.

It was too high.

She climbed onto a metal box.

Her fingers barely reached it.

Nathan’s voice stopped.

A camera inside the shaft turned toward her.

“Harper.”

She froze.

“You do not want to pull that.”

She looked directly at the camera.

“You took my mommy.”

“Yes.”

“And now you can help her.”

“Walk back.”

Harper gripped the handle with both hands.

Nathan’s voice became sharp.

“Obey me.”

The child pulled.

Emergency doors opened throughout the archive.

Fresh air rushed through the vents.

Federal agents entered.

Dominic lifted Harper from the shaft.

“You saved us.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Mommy said little people can remember big things.”

A gunshot sounded in the hallway.

Nathan was still inside the estate.

And he had reached Elena’s old study.
