Chapter 10 - Arthur Bell Returns
The digital recording cleared Arthur Bell of helping plan Elena’s death.
It did not explain where he had gone.
Federal agents searched payment records hidden inside Nathan’s server room.
Arthur had received monthly transfers for four years.
The money moved into a medical-care account under another name.
The account paid for treatment at a private rehabilitation center in Vermont.
Arthur had not retired.
He had been living there with severe injuries and memory loss.
Nathan shot him in the garage on the night Elena’s car was sabotaged.
Arthur survived.
Nathan placed him inside the facility under a false identity and threatened his family into silence.
Dominic traveled to Vermont with Serena.
Arthur lay in a wheelchair beside a window.
One side of his face remained partially paralyzed.
He recognized Dominic immediately.
“I failed her.”
His voice was rough.
“You tried to stop Nathan.”
“Not soon enough.”
“Why did Elena say not to trust you?”
“Because Nathan made her believe I was reporting to him.”
“I was pretending.”
“I needed access to the security system.”
Arthur described Elena’s final weeks.
She knew Nathan was stealing.
She suspected Claire had entered Dominic’s life deliberately.
She asked Arthur to copy the gate records and record Nathan’s conversations.
Arthur agreed.
Nathan discovered them.
The night Elena planned to meet federal investigators, Nathan ordered Victor to cut the brake line.
Arthur entered the garage and confronted him.
Nathan shot him.
Then he placed Arthur inside a vehicle and sent him to a private doctor.
“Why did he keep you alive?” Dominic asked.
“He needed my security codes.”
“For three months, he kept me drugged.”
“He used recordings of my voice to authorize changes.”
“After that?”
“I could not remember enough to testify.”
“He paid the facility to keep me isolated.”
Arthur looked toward the trees outside.
“Elena called me from the road.”
“She knew the brakes were failing.”
“What did she say?”
“She said Lily had seen Claire near the red car.”
“She said the black ledger was hidden.”
“Then the call ended.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
“Did she ask for me?”
Arthur’s silence answered first.
“Yes.”
“She told me to make you believe her.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
He had spent four years grieving Elena.
Now he had to live with knowing her final hope had been that someone would convince him she was telling the truth.
Arthur reached toward him.
“Nathan spent years teaching you that doubt was weakness.”
“He made loyalty feel like character.”
“You were not the only person he fooled.”
“No.”
“But I was the one Elena needed.”
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt.
Dominic accepted it.
Arthur agreed to testify.
He also gave investigators the location of a final evidence cache.
Elena had hidden documents inside a safe-deposit box under Harper’s name.
The box contained the original mountain-road photographs, foundation audits, and a video message for her daughter.
Harper watched it with Mia, Dominic, and a child therapist present.
Elena appeared on the screen sitting inside her study.
“If you are old enough to watch this, then something may have happened to me.”
Harper pressed against Mia.
Elena continued.
“You may remember things that frighten you.”
“You may not have words for them.”
“That is all right.”
“You never owe anyone a perfect explanation before you deserve to be safe.”
Dominic looked away.
Elena’s message was meant for Harper.
It also described Mia’s rescue.
A child had spoken imperfectly.
Dominic had finally listened.
At the end, Elena smiled.
“Your father loves deeply.”
“But sometimes he trusts the people beside him more than the quiet voice inside himself.”
“Help him remember that love should make us pay closer attention, not less.”
Harper touched the screen.
“Mommy Elena.”
It was the first time she had used the name.
Dominic began crying.
Mia did not move closer to comfort him.
