Chapter 11 - The Empire Nathan Built
Nathan’s arrest did not end the crisis.
It opened it.
The red book connected dozens of people to bribery, fraud, blackmail, illegal surveillance, and corporate theft.
Three Vale directors resigned before investigators reached their homes.
Two government officials were arrested.
A judge stepped down after evidence showed Nathan paid his gambling debts.
Several police officers had helped alter Elena’s crash report.
Vale Industries lost contracts within days.
Banks froze major accounts.
Employees feared the company would collapse.
Dominic’s advisers urged him to protect the brand.
They suggested denying knowledge.
They wanted Claire described as a troubled outsider.
They wanted Nathan presented as one dishonest employee.
Dominic refused.
Nathan had operated beneath his home, inside his company, and beside his family for seventeen years.
Calling him an outsider would be another lie.
Dominic held a public meeting with employees.
Cameras filled the Vale headquarters auditorium.
Mia watched from home with Harper.
Dominic stood alone at the podium.
“Nathan Cross committed crimes using this company’s systems.”
“He did so because I gave him authority without oversight.”
“I believed personal loyalty could replace accountability.”
“I was wrong.”
Reporters shouted questions.
Dominic continued.
“We will open every relevant record to independent investigators.”
“Executives connected to Nathan will be removed.”
“Employees who reported misconduct and were punished will be contacted.”
“Vale Industries will establish a compensation fund for people harmed by this network.”
A board member interrupted.
“You are admitting liability before legal review.”
Dominic looked at him.
“I am admitting facts before public relations changes their names.”
The statement caused the company’s share price to fall again.
It also caused employees to begin speaking.
A warehouse manager revealed Nathan had ordered unsafe materials shipped under false certifications.
An accountant produced duplicate ledgers.
A former assistant showed messages proving Claire received confidential information about Dominic before meeting him.
A security guard admitted Nathan ordered him to ignore Mia’s absence.
Every person believed someone else already knew.
That was how the system survived.
Mia returned to the estate only once.
She came to collect her belongings.
Dominic met her in the foyer.
Harper stood beside her holding a repaired stuffed rabbit.
“I want you both to remain,” Dominic said.
Mia looked toward the basement corridor.
“No.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“I am trying to.”
“This house watched me disappear for three days.”
“Staff members accepted Claire’s explanation.”
“Security logs were changed.”
“No one checked my room.”
“No one asked my child why she was alone.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
“You are right.”
“I will provide housing.”
“No.”
“Medical expenses.”
“You are legally responsible for injuries that happened on your property.”
“My attorney will discuss them.”
He almost smiled.
“You have an attorney now.”
“Serena recommended one.”
“Good.”
Mia lifted her suitcase.
“I will not remain your maid.”
“I was going to offer another position.”
“Do not.”
“The first thing powerful people do after failing someone is offer them a better place inside the same system.”
Dominic absorbed the words.
“What do you want?”
“A home where Harper can sleep without listening for hidden doors.”
“A job where I am noticed before I vanish.”
“And the truth about Elena in open court.”
“You will have all three.”
Mia studied him.
“You cannot promise the court.”
“No.”
“But I can promise I will not hide behind the company.”
“That is all I can control.”
Mia nodded.
It was not forgiveness.
It was recognition that he had finally spoken honestly.
Before leaving, Harper walked toward Dominic.
She held out the black key.
“You keep it.”
He closed her fingers around it.
“No.”
“You found the door.”
“You keep it.”
Harper placed it inside her rabbit’s repaired stomach.
This time, Mia did not stop her.
