Chapter 3 - The Key to the Chapel

Mia remembered only one unusual thing about the black key.

A tiny cross had been carved into its handle.

Dominic knew exactly where to search.

The Vale family chapel stood at the eastern edge of the estate.

It had been built by his great-grandfather and used for weddings, funerals, and family baptisms.

Dominic had not entered it since Elena’s memorial service.

He returned to the mansion with Serena, Lucas, and a forensic team.

Police searched the grounds for Claire.

The service vehicle was found abandoned near the north gate.

Mud tracks led toward the road.

A second car had been waiting for her.

Someone had helped her escape.

Inside the chapel, Dominic examined the altar, the pews, and the old doors leading toward the family crypt.

The black key fit none of the visible locks.

Lucas noticed a small cross carved into the stone beneath Elena’s memorial plaque.

He pressed it.

A narrow keyhole appeared behind a sliding panel.

Dominic inserted the key.

A section of the wall opened.

Behind it was a steel cabinet.

Inside were folders, digital drives, photographs, and a handwritten letter addressed to Dominic.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Dominic,

If you are reading this, then Nathan has either been exposed or he has finally decided I know too much.

Dominic stopped.

Serena stood quietly beside him.

He continued reading.

Nathan has been stealing money through the foundation.

He has paid company directors, public officials, and private investigators.

Claire Cole is helping him.

She did not meet you by accident.

They have been studying your life for years.

Dominic remembered the charity dinner where Claire first introduced herself.

Nathan had arranged the seating.

He had insisted Dominic attend.

Elena’s letter continued.

I tried to tell you twice.

Both times, Nathan convinced you I was exhausted and emotional.

You believed him because trusting your oldest friend was easier than questioning him.

Dominic lowered the page.

The words hurt because they were true.

Elena had spoken about financial irregularities.

He had told her to rest.

Nathan had warned that grief after her father’s death was making her suspicious.

Dominic had allowed another man to translate his wife’s fear.

He returned to the letter.

If anything happens to me, examine the mountain-road maintenance contracts.

Do not trust Arthur Bell.

Do not trust the security records.

And do not allow Nathan near our daughter.

Dominic looked toward Lucas.

“Who is Arthur Bell?”

“The former director of estate security.”

“He retired after Elena’s death.”

“Where is he now?”

“I do not know.”

The folders inside the cabinet contained photographs of Nathan meeting Claire at hotels two years before Elena died.

Another photograph showed Claire beside Victor Shaw, the mechanic paid before the crash.

A digital recording captured Nathan’s voice.

“Elena is becoming dangerous.”

Claire answered.

“She only suspects the foundation.”

“She suspects you.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Learn her schedule.”

The next recording was dated five days before the crash.

Claire said Elena planned to drive to a meeting with federal investigators.

Nathan answered.

“Then Tuesday gives us one opportunity.”

Serena paused the recording.

“This is enough to reopen the death investigation.”

“It is also enough for federal fraud charges.”

A forensic technician opened the ledger copies.

The original black ledger remained missing.

But Elena had photographed several pages.

Payments connected Nathan to judges, police officers, medical professionals, and corporate directors.

One entry involved a company named Cross Meridian Holdings.

Another involved Vale Global Rescue.

Dominic had never authorized that company.

“What is Vale Global Rescue?” he asked.

Lucas searched the corporate database.

“It appears to be a disaster-relief subsidiary.”

“We do not have a disaster-relief subsidiary.”

“Someone created one using your electronic signature.”

The company had received more than eighty million dollars from Vale contracts.

Most of the money had moved overseas.

Nathan was not merely stealing from a charity.

He had built a shadow company using Dominic’s name.

Another folder contained copies of Dominic’s life-insurance policies.

Claire had been added as a beneficiary two months earlier.

The change carried Dominic’s signature.

He had never signed it.

“They planned to marry,” Serena said.

“Then Nathan would arrange another accident.”

“Claire would inherit enough voting shares to influence the company.”

“And Nathan would control her.”

Dominic folded Elena’s letter.

“No.”

“Nathan does not control Claire.”

“They work together.”

A phone vibrated inside the cabinet.

It was an old device with no visible number.

Dominic answered on speaker.

Nathan’s voice filled the chapel.

“You finally opened Elena’s little vault.”

Dominic looked toward the ceiling.

“How are you watching us?”

“I watched you for seventeen years.”

“You are predictable when you are angry.”

“You killed my wife.”

“Elena chose a dangerous road during a storm.”

“You paid the mechanic.”

“I paid many mechanics.”

“Claire followed her.”

“Claire did many foolish things.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere beyond your reach.”

“What do you want?”

“The black key.”

“The chapel files.”

“And Mia Carter.”

“She is not coming near you.”

“Then Harper becomes the price.”

Serena was already calling the hospital.

Nathan continued.

“You have until midnight.”

“Bring everything to the old Vale textile mill.”

“Come alone.”

“If I see police, the child disappears.”

The line went dead.

Serena’s partner answered from the hospital.

Mia remained inside her room.

Harper did not.

No examination had been scheduled.
