The Vengeance of a Quiet Man / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1

The weekend passed in a blur of silent tension,

as Diane moved quietly around our house like a ghost.

She avoided the garden,

and she did not answer the phone when our relatives called.

Everyone wanted to talk about the wedding,

everyone wanted to gossip about the horrible mud incident.

I intercepted every single call,

telling them Diane was resting and could not speak.

I spent my time finalizing the legal traps,

making sure every single loophole was tightly closed.

Monday morning arrived with a clear blue sky,

and a sharp wind that rattled the bedroom windows.

I woke up early,

and dressed in a custom suit I rarely wore.

Today was not a day for blending in,

today was a day for absolute domination.

I drove to my downtown office again,

and waited for the inevitable fireworks to start.

At exactly nine o'clock,

Vincent Gallagher arrived at his primary import warehouse.

According to the reports from my security team,

he swiped his keycard at the front gate.

The light blinked red,

and the heavy iron gates refused to open.

He tried again,

and then he started yelling at the intercom.

My security chief,

a large man named Miller,

walked out to meet him.

Miller handed Vincent a thick manila envelope,

containing the immediate eviction notice for non-payment.

I watched the security feed on my office monitor,

enjoying the look of pure shock on Vincent's arrogant face.

He pulled out his cell phone,

frantically dialing his bank to fix the embarrassing problem.

But the bank was not taking his calls,

because Pierce had already filed the fraud injunctions.

Vincent's accounts were entirely frozen,

pending a massive federal investigation into the forged deed.

He stood in the parking lot,

yelling at his phone while his employees watched in confusion.

This was the man Aaron admired,

this was the man who was supposedly richer than God.

Right now,

he looked like a pathetic child throwing a massive tantrum.

I turned away from the screen,

and focused on the next phase of my careful plan.

Aaron and Brittany were in Paris,

posting pictures of their luxury suite on social media.

They were spending money that did not exist,

charging everything to Vincent's platinum corporate cards.

But those cards were tied to the frozen accounts,

and the international banks were about to catch up to them.

I wanted them to feel the panic,

I wanted them to realize their safety net was gone.

Meanwhile,

I had to handle the most difficult task of all.

I had to sit down with Diane,

and tell her exactly what our son had done.

I drove back to the house at noon,

finding her in the kitchen making a pot of tea.

She looked at my expensive suit,

her eyebrows raising in slight surprise.

You look very handsome today,

she said gently,

pouring a cup of tea for me.

I took the warm cup,

and asked her to sit down at the kitchen table.

Her smile faded instantly,

sensing the heavy seriousness in my tired voice.

What is wrong, Warren,

she asked,

her hands trembling slightly against the table.

I pulled out the copies of the forged loan documents,

and laid them out directly in front of her.

I told her everything,

from the fake medical proxy to the stolen lake house.

I explained how Aaron had sold us out,

just to buy a fake partnership in a bankrupt company.

Diane stared at the papers,

her eyes scanning the forged signature that looked like hers.

She did not cry at first,

she just stopped breathing for a long moment.

He was holding my hand,

she whispered,

staring blankly at the wall.

He held my hand and smiled,

while I signed our memories away.

The betrayal was so deep,

it seemed to physically drain the color from her face.

Then the tears finally came,

silent and heavy,

falling onto the copied documents.

I reached across the table,

and held her shaking hands in mine.

I will fix this,

I promised her,

my voice thick with terrible emotion.

I will take everything back,

and I will make sure they pay for what they did.

Diane looked up at me,

her sad eyes suddenly hardening into sharp steel.

Do it,

she said firmly,

wiping the tears away from her cheeks.

Burn it all down, Warren,

and do not leave them a single penny.

That was all the permission I needed,

to unleash the absolute worst upon them.

The destruction of Gallagher Imports happened very quickly,

like a house of cards collapsing in a strong wind.

By Tuesday afternoon,

the news had leaked to the local financial press.

Vincent's suppliers stopped their shipping trucks,

refusing to deliver goods without immediate cash payments.

His employees started packing their desks,

realizing their paychecks were going to bounce hard.

Vincent tried to secure an emergency bridge loan,

but no bank would touch him with a massive fraud investigation pending.

He was toxic,

and his entire reputation was completely destroyed in forty-eight hours.

I sat in my office reading the newspaper,

smiling at the small article on the third page.

It mentioned a mysterious holding company,

which was calling in the massive debts.

Nobody knew I owned that holding company,

not yet anyway.

I wanted the suspense to build,

I wanted Vincent to sweat in pure ignorance.

My phone rang,

and Sarah told me I had a frantic caller on line one.

It was Aaron,

calling from a hotel lobby in Paris.

I let it ring three times,

savoring the sound before I finally picked up.

Dad,

Aaron said,

his voice high and tight with absolute panic.

I need your help right now,

something crazy is happening with Vincent's accounts.

I leaned back in my leather chair,

staring at the ceiling with cold indifference.

What seems to be the problem,

I asked,

keeping my tone completely flat and bored.

Brittany's credit cards were just declined at a boutique,

he explained quickly,

and the hotel is threatening to lock us out of our room.

They are saying the corporate accounts are frozen,

and Vincent is not answering any of my calls.

I tapped my pen against the desk,

letting the silence stretch out painfully over the line.

That sounds like a terrible situation,

I finally said,

but I do not see how it involves me.

You have savings,

Aaron pleaded,

you have that retirement account you never touch.

Just wire me twenty thousand dollars,

so we can pay the hotel and get flights back home.

I actually laughed,

a dry and harsh sound that echoed in my office.

You told me to keep my pathetic little savings,

I reminded him coldly,

when you were standing in front of your rich friends.

Dad, please,

he begged,

that was just a stupid misunderstanding.

Brittany is crying in the lobby,

and the concierge is calling the local police.

I thought about Diane crying in the mud,

and my heart turned into a solid block of ice.

Maybe you should ask your new partner for an advance,

I suggested cruelly,

since you are a full partner at Gallagher Imports now.

Oh wait,

I added softly,

Gallagher Imports is currently undergoing a massive federal fraud investigation.

Aaron stopped talking,

the line going dead silent except for the static.

How do you know that,

he asked,

his voice suddenly dropping an octave in pure fear.

Because I am the one investigating them, Aaron,

I said,

dropping the final massive bomb on his head.

I am the one who owns the warehouses,

and I am the one who reported your forged signature on the lake house deed.

I heard a sharp gasp on the other end,

as the horrible reality finally crashed down on him.

You tricked your mother,

I continued,

while she was drugged in a hospital bed.

You stole our home,

and you laughed when your wife assaulted her.

Dad,

he stammered,

you don't understand, Vincent made me do it.

He said it was just a temporary collateral transfer,

he promised me we would get the house back next year.

I do not care what he promised you,

I snapped,

my anger finally breaking through my calm facade.

You are a thief,

and you are no longer welcome in our family.

Do not call this number again,

and do not ever show your face at our house.

I hung up the phone,

cutting off his desperate apologies mid-sentence.

I placed the receiver down gently,

feeling a dark sense of closure settle over me.

He was stranded in a foreign country,

with no money and a wife who only loved his fake wealth.

May you like

It was the perfect beginning to his punishment,

but I was far from finished with him.
