Chapter 1: The Gatecrasher

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom didn't just open; they exploded inward, the splintering wood echoing like cannon fire over the soft hum of the string quartet.

Jack burst through the threshold, his face contorted in a mask of primal, unadulterated fury. In his arms, he tightly clutched a young girl, no older than seven, who was weeping uncontrollably. Blood smeared across the child’s forehead, staining her pale skin and the soft fur of the plush brown teddy bear she held in a death grip against her chest.

The room froze. Beneath the glittering light of crystal chandeliers, a sea of elite guests in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns gasped in collective horror, the sharp sound mingling with the distinct clinking of dropped champagne flutes shattering against the polished marble floor.

Jack’s chest heaved. His eyes, cold and assessing, swept the opulent room, cutting through the crowd of stunned elites. He wasn't looking for a way out; he was looking for a target.

The little girl buried her bloodied face into Jack's shoulder, then slowly lifted her head. Her trembling, tear-streaked face turned toward the center of the room. She raised a tiny, bruised finger, pointing past the stunned guests toward a stunning woman in a deep, plunging burgundy velvet dress. The woman stood frozen next to a towering, multi-tiered white wedding cake adorned with pale pink roses.

"It's her," the little girl choked out, her voice raw and terrified. "The impostor."

The woman by the cake feigned a look of shocked innocence, her eyes widening as she pressed a hand to her chest. But before Jack could move, the crowd parted seamlessly, giving way to an older woman whose presence commanded absolute, terrifying authority. She wore a sharp, tailored powder-blue suit, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her expression as hard as granite.

Flanking her were heavily armed men in immaculate dark suits, moving with the synchronized lethality of a private hit squad. They raised their weapons in unison, the laser sights painting red dots across Jack's chest and face.

"You shouldn't have come back for her, Jack," the older woman in the blue suit stated, her voice a chilling reprimand devoid of any human empathy.

In a fraction of a second, the guards closed the distance. The cold, black muzzles of half a dozen handguns were thrust directly into Jack's face, aimed squarely at his head from every angle. He was entirely surrounded, trapped beneath the glow of the chandelier, holding a wounded child.

Jack didn't flinch. Instead, a dangerous, unhinged grin spread across his face, his teeth bared like a cornered wolf. He shifted the girl slightly, his free hand dropping to his waist. His fingers hooked through the metallic ring of a high-explosive flash-fragmentation grenade.

"The party," Jack snarled, his eyes locking onto the woman in the blue suit, "is just getting started."

With a sharp yank, he pulled the pin.

As the spoon flipped away, the screen of their lives went pitch black, swallowed by the deafening roar of ignition.
