Chapter 3: Blood on the Teddy Bear

Twenty-four hours earlier.

The rain had been falling just as hard when Jack found her.

He was a ghost. A burned CIA operative who had spent the last five years living off the grid in the Pacific Northwest, trying to forget a past built on body counts. But when his brother, Arthur, a brilliant geneticist, died in a suspicious car crash, Jack knew he had to come out of the shadows. Arthur's wife, Sarah, had supposedly survived the crash, but her subsequent communications with Jack had felt... synthetic. Rehearsed.

Jack had tracked Sarah to a secure black-site estate disguised as a suburban mansion. He breached the perimeter at 0200 hours, expecting to find his sister-in-law held hostage. Instead, he found the basement.

It was a sterile, concrete cell. Huddled in the corner, clutching a worn teddy bear, was Lily. His niece.

She had been missing for three months. The world thought she was dead, consumed in the fiery wreckage of her father's car. When Jack approached her, she shrank back, her forehead bleeding from a fresh, nasty gash where she had hit her head trying to escape her handlers.

"Lily? It's Uncle Jack," he had whispered, dropping his tactical rifle and kneeling slowly.

She looked up, her eyes wide with trauma. "They took Mommy," she whispered, her voice raspy. "The woman upstairs... she looks like Mommy. She sounds like Mommy. But she's empty inside. She's the impostor."

Jack had quickly patched her forehead, anger boiling in his veins. The syndicate had killed his brother, hidden his niece, and replaced his sister-in-law with a surgically altered double—a plant designed to seize control of Arthur’s groundbreaking biometric patents.

He had carried her out of the basement, a vow forming in his mind. He wasn't just going to rescue her. He was going to tear their entire operation to the ground, starting with their celebratory gala the very next night.
