Chapter 22 - The Stray Thread

Miriam arrived at the Hartwell Logistics building precisely at noon. She did not wear the triumphant expression of a lawyer who had recently dismantled a corrupt senator and a fraudulent CEO. She wore the neutral mask of a woman who knew that victories in their line of work were usually just intermissions. She sat across from Evelyn, reviewing the tablet Ben had provided. The encrypted routing logs glowed on the screen, a digital trail of breadcrumbs leading into the dark.
“Vanguard Apex,” Miriam said, testing the syllables. “It sounds like a generic corporate shield. The kind of name generated by an algorithm to hide money.”
“Ben traced the registry to a proxy server in the Cayman Islands,” Evelyn said. “It was established three years ago. Right around the time Nathan first introduced my father to Senator Vale.”
“You think Vale had a silent partner.”
“I think Vale was arrogant,” Evelyn corrected gently. “Arrogant men love to believe they are at the top of the pyramid. But they also love other people’s money. Campaigns are expensive. Infrastructure independence, as Vale called it, is even more expensive. Someone funded Crownline’s initial quiet acquisitions.”
“And that someone installed a backdoor to monitor their investment,” Miriam concluded, tapping her pen against the table. “A failsafe. If Vale went down, the silent partner had all the leverage and none of the exposure. Smart.”
“Too smart for Nathan,” Evelyn said. “He wouldn’t have noticed the code. And Vale was too busy admiring his own reflection to check his blind spots.”
“So, what is the play, Evelyn?” Miriam asked. “You won. Vale is in federal prison waiting for trial. Nathan is disgraced, divorced, and financially ruined. Hartwell Logistics is safe. Why pull this thread?”
Evelyn looked at the screen. She thought of her father, collapsing in his office, and Nathan waiting twelve minutes to call an ambulance because he was busy calling power.
“Because the thread is still attached to my father’s company,” Evelyn said. “Whoever Vanguard Apex is, they hold a complete ledger of Crownline’s illegal activities. Which means they have leverage over anyone who ever touched those accounts.”
Miriam sighed. “Including Julia Chen and your current board.”
“Exactly.”

“I will look into Vanguard Apex,” Miriam said, standing up. “But Evelyn, be careful. You dragged the last monsters into the light. The ones who hide in the deep dark are usually much worse.”
“I know,” Evelyn said. “But I have better lighting now.”
