Chapter 24 - The Proxy War

The first strike did not come with a threat. It came with a margin call. Julia Chen, the newly appointed CEO of Hartwell Logistics, stood at the head of the boardroom table, her posture rigid. The holographic display behind her showed a sudden, violent downward spike in Hartwell’s stock price. Evelyn sat in her usual chair, watching the numbers bleed red across the screen. The room was tense, the air thick with the panicked energy of executives who had just survived a war only to find themselves ambushed in peacetime.
“It started at the opening bell,” Julia explained, her voice remarkably steady despite the chaos. “A massive short-selling campaign. Institutional investors are dumping our shares, and three major logistics contracts have suddenly put their renewals on hold pending a 'risk reassessment'.”
“Who is driving the short?” Evelyn asked.
“A coalition of hedge funds,” Julia replied. “But they all trace back to a single primary underwriter. A private equity firm called Apex Capital Holdings.”
“Thorne,” Evelyn murmured.
Dana Wilkes, the chief people officer, leaned forward. “Who is Thorne?”
“Marcus Thorne,” Evelyn said, addressing the room. “He was the silent capital behind Senator Vale’s operations. He’s the one who held the true ledger of the Crownline theft. I paid Vale a visit yesterday. Thorne must have found out.”
“So this is retaliation?” Julia asked, her eyes darting back to the falling stock price.
“No,” Evelyn said. “This is a quarantine. Thorne knows we found the backdoor protocol. He knows we can connect his money to Vale’s treason. He is trying to crash Hartwell Logistics so he can buy the debt, take a controlling interest, and bury the evidence from the inside.”
The boardroom erupted into hushed, anxious conversations. Evelyn let them speak for a moment before she raised her hand. The room fell silent.
“We survived Nathan Grant,” Evelyn said, her voice carrying absolute authority. “We survived Senator Vale. We will not be bullied into surrendering our family’s company to a shadow banker.”
“What is the strategy?” Julia asked.
“We fight the financial attack in the light,” Evelyn said. “Julia, you hold the board together. Call our loyal clients. Assure them our foundations are solid. Dana, freeze all internal asset transfers.”

“And you?” Julia asked.
Evelyn stood up. “I am going to find the one thing Marcus Thorne cannot afford to lose. His anonymity. We are going hunting.”
