Chapter 26 - The Orchid Greenhouse

|
The air inside the orchid greenhouse was thick with humidity and the cloying scent of wet earth. Evelyn walked down the narrow gravel path, the vibrant, alien shapes of the flowers looming on either side. The glass roof filtered the midday sun into a hazy, dreamlike light. She wore a simple trench coat, her hands in her pockets, projecting an ease she did not entirely feel. Somewhere outside the glass, Agent Keene and two plainclothes operatives were monitoring the perimeter.
A man was waiting near the back, standing beside a display of rare black orchids. He was young, perhaps early thirties, wearing an expensive but rumpled suit. He looked exhausted. He looked exactly like a man who had been holding his breath for a very long time.
“Mrs. Hartwell,” he said as she approached.
“Just Evelyn,” she replied, stopping a few feet away. “You sent the email.”
“My name is David,” he said, his eyes darting nervously toward the entrance. “I was the lead systems architect for Apex Capital Holdings. Thorne hired me out of MIT. Paid me more money than I knew how to spend. Told me we were building the future of algorithmic trading.”
“But that’s not what you were building,” Evelyn prompted gently.
David laughed, a bitter, fragile sound. “No. I built a ghost network. A system designed to launder influence, move dark money, and blackmail politicians. When I realized what the Vanguard Apex protocol was actually doing with Crownline, I tried to quit.”
“And Thorne didn’t let you.”
“Thorne doesn’t accept resignations,” David said, pulling a small, encrypted flash drive from his pocket. He gripped it tightly. “He told me if I left, I would face federal charges for wire fraud. He said he had already framed the architecture to make me look like the mastermind. I was trapped.”
Evelyn recognized the tactic. It was the same invisible cage Nathan had tried to build around her. The threat of ruin, disguised as inevitability.
“You aren’t trapped anymore, David,” Evelyn said. “I have federal agents outside. We can offer you protection and immunity in exchange for your testimony and that drive.”

David looked at her, his hands shaking slightly. “The drive contains the decryption keys to Thorne’s master ledger. It proves he funded Vale. It proves he orchestrated the hostile takeover of Hartwell. It is everything.”
He held it out. Evelyn reached for it, but before her fingers could brush the metal, the glass door at the far end of the greenhouse shattered.
