Chapter 27 - The Extraction

The sound of breaking glass was brutally loud in the quiet greenhouse. Evelyn flinched as David dropped the flash drive in panic. Two men in dark windbreakers stepped through the shattered doorway, their expressions entirely blank. They did not look like security guards. They looked like professional erasers.
“David!” one of the men barked, his voice echoing off the humid glass walls. “You are violating your non-disclosure agreement. Come with us, now.”
David froze, his eyes wide with absolute terror. He looked at the men, then down at the drive resting on the gravel path.
Evelyn did not hesitate. Years of sitting in quiet rooms, absorbing the threats of powerful men, had fundamentally rewired her instincts. She did not freeze. She stepped forward, deliberately placing her heel over the flash drive, hiding it in the gravel, and positioned herself directly between David and the two men.
“He isn’t going anywhere,” Evelyn said, her voice slicing through the heavy air.
The lead man sneered. “Step aside, Mrs. Grant. This is a corporate matter.”
“It’s Hartwell,” she corrected sharply. “And this is a federal matter.”
Before the men could take another step, the main doors of the greenhouse burst open. Agent Keene strode in, weapon drawn, followed by two armed agents. The shift in power in the room was instantaneous and absolute.
“FBI! Hands where I can see them!” Keene shouted.
The two men stopped. They exchanged a brief, calculating glance, calculating the odds of a clean extraction against the reality of federal weapons pointed at their chests. Slowly, methodically, they raised their hands.
“We are private security contractors for Apex Capital,” the lead man said smoothly, adopting a veneer of legality. “We are simply escorting an erratic employee back to the office.”
“You can explain that to the judge,” Keene said. “Cuff them.”
As the agents moved in, Evelyn knelt down and scooped the flash drive from the gravel. She wiped the dirt from its casing and handed it to David.
“You hold onto this,” she told him, her voice steady. “You give it directly to Agent Keene. That is your shield. No one can touch you now.”
David took the drive, his hands finally stopping their tremor. He looked at Evelyn with a mixture of awe and immense relief.

“Thank you,” he whispered.
Evelyn nodded, turning to watch the men being led away. Marcus Thorne had made his first mistake. He had sent thugs into the light, and now, Evelyn had the key to his dark.
