Chapter 32 - The Panic

|

The silence that followed Evelyn’s announcement did not last. It shattered into a chaotic symphony of dropped glasses, frantic whispers, and the rapid tapping of cell phone screens as hundreds of guests scrambled to check the news. The illusion of untouchable wealth evaporated in an instant, replaced by the primitive, desperate instinct of self-preservation. Investors who had been drinking Thorne’s champagne thirty seconds ago were now rushing toward the exits, eager to put as much distance between themselves and the sinking ship as possible.

Marcus Thorne stood entirely still. For the first time in his life, the room he commanded was dissolving around him. He stared at Evelyn, his eyes burning with a venomous intensity.

“You are lying,” he said, his voice trembling slightly. “You don’t have the authority to initiate a federal raid.”

“I don’t,” Evelyn replied, standing her ground as the crowd surged past them. “Agent Keene does. She was very persuaded by the decryption keys David provided. And by the wire fraud evidence Ben compiled from the Crownline servers.”

Thorne lunged forward, grabbing Evelyn by the arm. His grip was bruising, his polite veneer entirely stripped away. “I will destroy you! I will spend every cent I have to ruin you and your father’s pathetic legacy!”

Evelyn did not pull away. She looked down at his hand, then up at his face, her expression one of utter pity.

“Let go of her, Mr. Thorne.”

The voice belonged to Agent Keene. She emerged from the chaos of the fleeing guests, flanked by four federal agents in tactical gear. Their presence in the opulent museum hall was a jarring collision of reality and theater.

Thorne released Evelyn’s arm, his breath coming in shallow, jagged gasps. He adjusted his suit jacket, trying desperately to salvage a shred of dignity. “This is an illegal harassment,” he sneered at Keene. “My lawyers will have your badge by morning.”

“Marcus Thorne,” Keene said, producing a pair of heavy steel handcuffs, ignoring his bluster completely. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, racketeering, and violation of the Corrupt Organizations Act. You have the right to remain silent.”

As Keene secured the cuffs, Evelyn rubbed her arm where he had grabbed her. She watched Thorne being led away, his empire finally crumbling in the light.

“Thank you, Agent Keene,” Evelyn said quietly.

Keene nodded. “No, Evelyn. Thank you. Now go home. The war is over.”
