Chapter 31 - The Microphone

|

“I don’t terrorize, Evelyn,” Thorne said, taking a sip of his scotch. “I educate. I am simply teaching you the rules of gravity in this room.”

“It is a very impressive room,” Evelyn conceded, her tone mild, almost conversational. She glanced toward the center of the exhibit, where a small podium had been set up for the evening’s charity auction. The microphone was live, projecting a low hum over the classical string quartet playing in the corner.

“It is,” Thorne agreed. “And you do not belong in it.”

Evelyn took a deliberate step toward the podium. Thorne frowned, tracking her movement, but he did not intervene. He was too confident, too anchored in his belief that she was cornered.

“You see, Mr. Thorne, that is where Nathan made his mistake,” Evelyn said as she reached the edge of the stage. “He thought power was about the room you occupied. He thought silence was a symptom of defeat.”

“What are you doing?” Thorne hissed, his voice dropping an octave as he realized she was within arm’s reach of the audio equipment.

Evelyn ignored him. She stepped up to the podium and tapped the microphone. The sharp thud echoed off the stone walls of the Temple of Dendur, instantly cutting through the chatter. The string quartet faltered and stopped. Five hundred of the most powerful people in the city turned to look at her.

Thorne stepped forward, his face a mask of barely contained fury. “Cut the sound,” he snapped at a nearby security guard, but Evelyn had already leaned into the mic.

“Good evening,” Evelyn’s voice boomed across the marble, steady and crystal clear. “My name is Evelyn Hartwell. Most of you know me. Some of you fear me. But tonight, I am just a messenger.”

The room was deathly quiet. Thorne was frozen, realizing too late that tackling her on stage would destroy the very illusion of control he relied upon.

“Your host tonight, Marcus Thorne, has built an empire on a simple premise,” Evelyn continued, her eyes sweeping over the crowd. “He believes he can buy your integrity. For many of you in this room, he was right.”

Murmurs of shock rippled through the audience.

“But earlier today,” Evelyn said, “the FBI finished decrypting the Vanguard Apex ledger. A complete, unredacted list of every illegal campaign contribution, every coerced judicial ruling, and every stolen trade secret Mr. Thorne has orchestrated over the last decade.”

Thorne’s face drained of color.

“The raid on Apex Capital Holdings began exactly four minutes ago,” Evelyn concluded. She stepped away from the podium and looked directly at Thorne. “Enjoy the gala.”
